Lacking a forum in which to question and confront their representatives

That says it all, doesn’t it?

WOW! Thanks for posting the pic of Beto in Lubbock. He was my congressman before I moved. Nice guy, mostly a policy wonk. Low key personality. The second time he ran for election to the El Paso City Council, he impressed me as being uncomfortable campaigning person to person, which is what you do in municipal elections and why I had my doubts about his current run.

That he could draw enthusiasm in Lubbock is something. Lubbock is very conservative. And it’s hard for any candidate, let alone a Democratic candidate, from West Texas less famous than Billy Sol Estes to get enough name recognition in the rest of Texas to stand much of a chance in a state-wide election.

But the crowds like him in Lubbock. LUBBOCK! Count me impressed (and hopeful). Thanks again for that link.

Dunno about the border crossing part, but his first name is Robert, which people who are named Roberto often shorten to Beto.

Anglo West Texans sometimes assume Hispanic affectations to impress others with their command of Spanish. Beto’s not that kind of person, and I have no doubt it’s a family name. When politicians do that, however, they often draw the ire of Hispanic voters. One local Hispanic bigwig in the El Paso Democratic Party supporting his opponent in his first congressional primary publicly and often referred to him as “Bay-toe.” He handily beat our idiot incumbent congressman, anyway and I hope he beats Cruz like a screen door in the wind.

Me too.

There is a phenomenon with Spanish names in northern New Mexico. A number of them are shortened, hispanicized versions of Jewish names. A common one is Rael, which evolved from Israel. Which is OT, but I agree with you about Beto.

God there just is no reason why he shouldn’t beat Cruz like a drum.

When later asked by a reporter about the demonstrators, he dismissed them as a “small group of people on the left who right now are very angry.”

Has anyone told him that he is accountable to all of his constituents, not just the ones he likes?

S. Reyes was always a cipher. On the other hand, he was more useful than any R. But O’Rourke is a big improvement.

I did too, if it makes you feel any better. When his name first started popping up, I did some research. I live in DFW, so West Texas is like a whole 'nother world to me (def another time zone).

I can’t pull up the article, because it’s on Politico Pro, but Kyle Griffin just tweeted a link that Beto has raised over $1 million in the past 2 months :open_mouth:

Wow!!! That is news!

Take it from a former resident of McAllen: You are full of complete and utter bullshit.

  1. Snowbirds can’t vote in Texas. They come down in the winter and then leave before the stifling summer heat hits. So they don’t fricking matter. Who gives a crap about those scumbags or what they (don’t) think?

  2. McAllen is bluer and more consistent about it than the lying filth of Austin. You cannot win in McA if you are not a Dem. Period. Dems win by 20 points or more there, nearly every single time. All of their elected officials are D. There isn’t one traitor conservafilth anywhere to be had there–unlike the lying filth of Austin.

When you don’t know what you’re talking about, sit down and shut up.
