Discussion: Team Trump Cries 'Plagiarism' Into The Void After Clinton's DNC Speech

Only if they quote it correctly, so most are safe …

not when it comes to the biographical section of the speech - Mrs. Trump stole sections verbatim from Mrs. Obama’s life story, made even more egregious and outrageous because the sections she stole were about the foundation of values, honesty and integrity.

sorry, not even close to a scientific paper.

These words are attributed to De Tocqueville but never appear in his works.1

Another case where everyone “knows” something that is simply not true and one more spurious attribution of a quote to someone famous to give it more heft.

OMGod, I plagiarized Donald Trump – oh, noes!!

Last night Donnie Jr. said Obama plagiarized him by also saying “It isn’t the country I know”. Nice try. Like Obama even watched your damn speech.

On another subject I’m posting here because comments are turned off on the headline story–

Why the hell is the headline on TPM today a story written on June 29th and discussing why Obama supporters are now for Trump. REALLY TPM? Today, after the historic convention last night, that is the best you’ve got? All stories about Trump. Shame. Not proud to have my TPM subscription right now.

It is pretty obvious what Trump is attempting to do. The Trump campaign was hurt badly when they were caught stealing from Michelle. They have to convince everybody that plagiarism is normal in American political speeches, so they pick up lines from American speeches and say with an amused wink “everybody does it.”

At a certain point Tocqueville’s phrase entered the common language. Every educated person knows the source. It is used because it is familiar and evokes a predictable response. There is no attempt to claim it as your own. No educated person would consider its use plagiarism.

De Tocqueville didn’t write it. I defy anyone babbling about “plagiarism” to find the passage in de Tocqueville 's writings. No one will. It’s not there. (It has been attributed to him, but it’s a well known aphorism of unknown origin. That’s not something one credits.) The members of Team Trump are as illiterate from a literary perspective as their icon. (Donald Trump, not Vladimir Putin.)

So if I say “We believe that all men are created equal” then, by that definition, I would be plagiarizing the Declaration of Independence. I would like to quote that great philosopher, Bugs Bunny who so eloquently stated, “What a maroon.”

The attribution to de Tocqueville may be incorrect as well.

The entire Trump campaign seems to be filled with Very Short-Fingered Little People. Time to grow up, boys, and drop the tit-for-tat.
