Open primaries become dangerous when: (1) the possibility of a particular party [here in MS the Democrats] winning in the general is slim to none, and (2) the primary candidates in the party likely to win [here Republicans] in the general present a choice between bad and worse. Given those circumstances, the voters in the underdog party will cast their PERFECTLY LEGAL open primary vote to choose between the lesser of two weasels in the other party.
