So, would Kelly suggest that we should have accepted a little slavery as a good thing?

So glad Ta-Nehisi spoke up…He is brilliant and erudite…Just what is needed in response to Kelly who seems not to know history or care.

Thank you , sir!

This sort of strong pushback on outdated ideas is sorely needed. The sane voices need to drown out the crazy and ignorant ones. Am i seeing the tide turning on the nation’s opinion of the civil war, or is that just here in the liberal bubble? I’ve seen a lot of discussions centered around the confederate monuments, and am wondering if we are seeing a sea change, or if it is just the circles i follow?

Absolutely brilliant! I am starting to believe that kelly is a very stupid man and a racist to boot. No wonder he was attracted to trump.

Share this article all over the damn place! To me, this is bigger than Manafort laundering charges as it shows true ROT in White House and GOP.

People like Kelly and Trump have been trying to rewrite history to say that the civil war was about states rights need a lesson in history and happy to see it done by Coates. Also, there is no words to describe the ugliness of Kelly saying he has no reason to apologize to a black woman who he called a liar and was proved wrong. Yep, this is a white man who thinks that being white gives him the moral high ground against someone who is other in his eyes.

What people don’t realize (as Coates has summarized) is the danger presented in 1858 through the Dred Scott decision was that there was a continuous push to expand the right of slavery to the entire United States. Theory was that since slaves were property, then banning slavery in the Northern States (and in the future, out West) was a violation of property rights and therefore unconstitutional. This was what Chief Justice Roger Taney and cronies were pushing. The lack of compromise was from the slave holders who never stopped pushing the evil of slavery.

The biggest mistake after the Civil War was to end Reconstruction too soon.

outstanding. This is the first twitter thread I have ever read that made such a coherent point. It should be an essay or short book.
