Given the body’s gridlock over just about everything and the party divisions caused by the war, any wider bill from lawmakers endorsing military action probably wouldn’t have gained passage — or at least not in the two weeks this month Congress was in session
[/quote]Well, if they don’t want to do something as small as vote for it, why are we putting our military in harm’s way to actually do it?
Ummmm… Because it seems like the only way ANYTHING gets done in Washington nowadays is if Obama goes out on his own? And FYI While Melendez’ call to give the AUMF the post-9/11 clean-up it needs is a good sign, some RWNJ over in the House has an AUMF cooked up that would allow any President to attack anyone, anytime, for any (or no) reason), because FREEDUMB! To my mind, that would be a lot worse than the current situation for one reason: President Cruz.
Well since they won’t be back till after the midterms who do they think they are fooling ?
So the lunatic party, that has been screaming for the last two years about this President being a weak leader, and how he needs to arm the Syrian rebels, while of course their little Miss Lindsey Graham has the vapors yelling about ISIL killing “millions” of Americans, are now going to use economic terrorism if they get the Senate back, as the only way they will continue the funding to arm and train those rebels?
Who are the REAL terrorists threatening this country over and over again? Obviously, ISIL is not such a threat as they would like us to believe while bashing this President for not doing enough against them, if this funding is contingent upon their economic terrorism against Americans.
First, the low-hanging fruit: John McCain is an idiot. Not only has the President already, on multiple occasions, “asked for” an authorization by Congress; but Congress doesn’t have to sit around and wait for the President to ask them to pass a force resolution. They can pass whatever they want, and the President has to go along with it.
Second, it’s interesting to me to watch people who’ve spent a decade or more complaining that the 2001 AUMF authorizes “permanent war against anyone anywhere on the planet” suddenly discover that the sole exception to this universality is ISIL.
They were right the first time; the 2001 AUMF was an incredibly broad authorization, and it pretty much does give the President a blank check to fight whatever conflict he wants against anyone with any link to al Qaeda.
As the President says, Congress should pass a new AUMF and withdraw the old one.
Does this congress do a thing that lasts longer than three months…? It’s about political advantage…not policy…
Well, I think someone at the WH needs to read the AUMF anew:
"That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.
OK, now we are suppose to take them (congress) seriously?
First they go on a 5 wks vacation then come back for 7 days before they went on their real ALL PAID VACATION… They go on TV and criticize the Pres. with intel from bloggers, newspapers, & TV bobble heads talking points that they get from each other…
Thus, you have Sunday talk shows that NOBODY watch… But yet, you have foreign press out pacing Amer. press. NO, you say? EX.: Russia: Thousand protest in Moscow against Russia’s involvement in Ukraine…
Putin’s panicking abt possible palace coup & arrest of Russian oligarch is just one sign of his fear.
Sec. Kerry & FM Zarif discussed nuke deal, IS for over 1 hr., then w/ top deputies. Their more, Afghan came to agreement over the election & agreed to sign agreement w/U.S.; Yemen PM agree to step down & cease fire… & this happen in 1 wknd. before UN assembly convene on Tues.
Echoes. Neocons attempt to hijack reality as if nothing ever happened. It’s what they do. Newcon looks just like the oldcon. Somewhat like the NRA playbook. Arm the bad guys, everything else is gravy.
Wouldn’t everyone agree that we need a working Congress before anything else can be done? We have a dysfunctional Congress loaded with dysfunctional politicians trying to do a job none are qualified for. We may as well put a librarian in charge of foreign policy for all the good our vacationing politicians do. Shyster lawyers, wealthy CEO’s and none with any or much of what is needed for the important job they managed to get themselves into. Go ahead America, vote’em in again. After all, money talks and that is all that matters in America today.
