Discussion: Sweden Faces Uncertainty After Close Election Due To Far-Right Party Boost

And which US billionaires and Russian oligarchs are funding the Far Right movements in Europe?

Note the Sunday election day. Why don’t we have weekend elections? Oh yeah, because Democrats would win.

Sweden Dems did well - not as well as expected, but well. Their main impact was not in the vote, but rather in the fact that they forced the discussion on the immigration issue in Sweden. Sweden’s situation is quite difficult, and it will be interesting to see how the final government that does come out addresses it. Sweden has an illegals problem, as bad or worse than the USA. It needs fixing, as does ours. They have the advantage of not having a border with any of the countries which are sources of the illegals. They have closed their border with Denmark, and now check papers. That’s a good first step.

  1. Please don’t feed the troll.
  2. Usually a situation like this one would call for a national unity government, but this story (granted, it’s AP so I should take it with a salt mine) sure sounds like the two coalitions each prefers fleas to the company of the other.

Also note this line:

Turnout in the election was reported at 84.4 percent, up from 83 percent in 2014.

Can you imagine how things would be in the US if a majority of adult citizens chose their government?

It’s painful to even think about.

There’s a thing to remember here. People in the European Social Democracies aren’t as prone to adopting a slate of ideas like Americans. Guns, Tax Cuts, killing O’care, religion in Government and ‘anti-everybody’ is a diverse agenda and for a wad of folks to all identify the same way on all of them is tribalism and very American. No way that happens in Europe. The right will get some latitude on immigration there. The people want that. But no way do they go anywhere jacking with the social aspects of Government. Sweden will still be Sweden with a change in immigration policy. That’s it. No way a northern European country goes full right.

Absolutely correct. There will be little movement on the basic tenets of the Swedish socialist arrangement, which I believe to be popular. The other parties will continue to move to restrict immigration (which has already started; the bridge between Denmark and Sweden was open to free movement and is no longer) and to deport, but little else will change. Sweden Dems would have possibly done better but were undercut by reforms in immigration policy.

This is a lesson that US democrats should learn. By going to a system of support for the rule of law, they could undercut Trump entirely. Doubt this will happen, though.
