Whether Kennedy stays or retires, it still must be said: Fuck the Fascist Five. Fuck them deep, hard and sans lube.

After this week, Kennedy may as well just be a Trump appointee anyway.

Actually, as a layperson, I would really, really appreciate a read on these SCOTUS decisions from some of the many talented lawyers we have here among the TPM denizens. They always bring in aspects that someone like me never considers (or is unaware of), and, personally, I benefit from their viewpoints…even if, sometimes, I wish they were not right. :smirk: Of course, sometimes they also calm me down when I overreact to things that are lawyerspeak and thus sound more gloom and doom than they are.

IMO the drump ban thing, wont have much impact, either will the crisis center thing. The public union thing though… will have a large impact, and further degrade workers rights.

Except that he’s old. I’ll take old Kennedy over young Trump appointee any day of the week.

It’s not too late for someone to call it quits. Justices Thurgood Marshall and Sandra Day O’Connor announced their retirements after the court had moved into its summer recess.

And let’s not forget that Antonin Scalia “called it quits” during the 2015-2016 winter recess.

I’m just now seeing things claiming Kennedy is retiring.

I appreciate their comments, too, but understand that they have lives that other people are always trying to fill with requests for their thoughts as lawyers.

Fortunately, there are some legal experts who are actively comment on Twitter or blogs about important court decisions. If you keep an eye out for links, you can build a good set of bookmarks.

The wishy-washy bastard should have retired a week ago instead of adding some 5-4 decisions.

Trumpp will want to fill the vacancy quickly. McConnell and others will convince him to drag it out enough to make it an issue in the 2018 Senate campaigns. He couldn’t ask for a better gift from Kennedy. Red-state voters who might have been satisfied keeping their Dem Senator will now be told that reelection of those Senators means no more of the wonderful conservative decisions they have been getting.

I was only referring to those who regularly comment on such things such as @tena and @khyber900, whose generally brief but knowledgeable comments I find to be very enlightening. It sounded like you were trying to push my comment into the “free legal advice during cocktail hour” category, which was in no way my intention nor, I believe, the way in which I formulated my comment. I just happen to value and trust the insights of many commenters here.

Not my intention. Sorry about that. I was speculating that get a lot of the free advice stuff elsewhere, on top of their busy lives and what we love to see from them here. I see a clear line between questions a client would ask and questions a person would ask to get a better understanding of events in the news. We have all kinds of experts here that contribute to keeping this a well-informed community.

I often visit Vox.com when I want a decent explainer of a policy or event. They are first rate in a few areas (they had great coverage of the post-election repeal and replace beat) and pretty good in almost all other areas they cover. There are many sites that will give better coverage of the policy/courts intersection, but I haven’t bookmarked any and so couldn’t give a good recommendation. Scotusblog is fantastic, of course, but sometimes demands more pre-existing knowledge than laypersons (like me) have.
