Teacher: Centuries ago, Atlanta was much further inland, about 250 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
Student: [scoffs] If it was so far from the Atlantic Ocean, why did they call it Atlanta, huh?
Teacher: That’s actually a modern urban myth, less than a hundred years old. There was a proposal to name it “Atlantica-Pacifica” since it was a rail station waypoint, but it got shortened to Atlanta before the proposal went to a vote. It wasn’t named Atlanta for being near the Atlantic, because it wasn’t.
Student: Says you, but my parents say the world has always been the way God made it, and to imply that it used to be different means you think God isn’t perfect. They say there never was a state called Florida and liberals just made it up to push their Anti-God Global Warming Agenda. I saw it all on Fox News, Discovery, and The History Channel!
