Discussion for article #243898
How refreshing! Hope it becomes nationwide. It’s good to know that students have not become institutionalized Eeeeeee-vangelicals.
Wheaton officials have insisted that their problem with the professor’s campaign is purely theological and unrelated to her choice to wear a hijab.
So, then, the problem is that Muslims worship an icky god … and the Wheaton people don’t?
“In the midst of a toxic socio-political environment where Muslims are the target of stigmatization, acts of aggression, and proposed policy which targets and alienates them, Dr. Hawkins acted in love and in solidarity to be an example of how Christ would respond,” the statement read in part.
Well put, protesters. We need quite a bit more of that from Christians in this country.
As I said in the previous post on this topic, this is not going to end well for the College.
Dr. Hawkins acted in love and in solidarity to be an example of how Christ would respond
That was her first “mistake.” I’m always amazed at how Christians get into trouble with the the Christian Establishment when they start acting like Christ.
Kudos to Dr. Hawkins and to the student protesters.
The Administration at Wheaton College does not worship the Biblical Jesus. They worship Rambo Jesus (and his BIG DONORS to the school who don’t like the image of having any "Sand Ni(CLANG!) on staff!)
Billy Graham’s alma mater.
Surprised?
The protesting students at Wheaton take Christ seriously . . . administration not so much.
“Wheaton officials have insisted that their problem with the professor’s campaign is purely theological…”
…which is something else they have gotten wrong, given that both religions clearly worship the same god. Is the administration packed with liars along with bigots?
This is OT but on something TPM has not yet posted and it’s worth reading. The man in San Bernardino who bought the assault rifles for the two killers will be charged by the Feds some time today.
Suspended her?
Hell, Dr. Hawkins should heralded as a national hero in the fight against daesh! This is what America needs right now.
What a tragic waste of an opportunity for Wheaton College and evangelicals in general. They have long painted themselves into a corner theologically, clinging to a dead god image and strained interpretations of a collection of 2 and 3,000 year old texts. So rather than embrace an opportunity to reinvigorate their world view, they lash out. I’ll bet the protesting students and their supporters will never forget this, and in more than a few, a process of questioning the authoritarian regime of biblical fundamentalism will not stop here.
Wheaton officials have insisted that their problem with the professor’s campaign is purely theological …
I CALL BULLSPIT ! - She has been on the faculty for 8 years - and they have proudly listed her work - some that looks at things from different angles - how do they suddenly get all pissy with a Political Science Professor’s Theological perspective ?

What Would Jebus Do?
their problem with the professor’s campaign is purely theological
Oh?
The fact is, Christians, Jews and Muslims all worship the same god of Abraham (hence their all being termed Abrahamic religions).
Funny how the idiots at this evangelical Christian college are simply wrong theologically as well. Of course their excuse is a bullshit fig leaf, and simply doesn’t hold water.
Good for them! I hope it works.
I do feel a bit sorry for her. But that’s what you get when you work for a school like that. And now all their other faculty members know what their so-called “tenure” is actually worth: absolutely nothing.
Hawkins is the only tenured black female professor at the school.
Things that make you go “Hmmmmmm”.
-
Good for the students!
-
Does Wheaton require a theological test for employees?
-
Wonder if AAUP is going to say anything about this. AAUP Home
And sometimes you have to work “for a school like that” because no other jobs are available.
So stop blaming her for being at that institution.
