Discussion: Stephen Hawking: 'Trump's Action Could Push The Earth Over The Brink'

Exactly what I was thinking.

I understand now why Elon Musk is in such a rush to get to Mars.

Never in my lifetime did i imagine that i’d see the end of the earth within my lifetime.

But, never mind the planet. We have health care to remove from million’s of American’s futures. If they’re all dead, they won’t see the end approaching, anyway. Removing healthcare to the masses is in their own best interest.

He’s not really up on astrophysicists. Or “infinity”, as last week’s Buzz Aldrin debacle revealed. And who wants to bet someone whispered in his ear seconds before, telling him who Buzz Aldrin is.

Is Hawking on Pruitt’s red team or blue team?

Trump: All I see is a great opportunity. I want Chaos. I will own everything in this world.

Not that this is not important to know. It is important, very important, of critical importance.
But can somebody suggest a way for me to stop feeling utterly and completely despondent about the state of our country at this moment? This is approaching suicidal territory.

Trump is doing everything to destroy America, not make it great again. Trump conned a lot of people into voting for him.

Don’t get suicidal. Yes things here are terrible, but there is more to life than the US.

A whole lot more. And nothing lasts forever, which is actually a positive thought if you look at it from the standpoint that that also means nothing terrible lasts forever.

Change is our only constant in this universe besides the speed of light.

It’s still a big world and there is still a lot of cool and beautiful shit out there.

Not until somebody explains to Trumpp that “two hundred and fifty degrees” and “raining sulphuric acid” are very bad things.

Every time I see that referenced along with Jones I have to ask, how the hell did they beat a qualified and well experienced person and vote for Trump. How. They believe this crap, they shouldn’t have the damn brains to drive to their Voting location.

I think we flew by that stop sign long ago.

The idea of putting our efforts into a project of extraterrestrial habitation, I ask, why? Why allow the human scourge to destroy another ecosystem? Other species overpopulate, destroy habitats, contract and recover on a regular basis. Humans were supposed to have the intellect to avoid these cycles. Perhaps another 100,000 years will do the trick.

So that is what they mean when they say you should achieve a life balance.

Almost anything mildly constructive or even just arguably positive that you do in the real world—petting a cat, say—will help. I don’t do it enough myself but I know it’s true. Gardening. A bike ride. A walk. Calling a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Also doing something in a small way to address the problems, but that’s got a slightly different vibe. Just changing gears is important. I look out my office window—I’m doing it literally as I type—and it’s the same world, same country, same backyards and alley it always was. You can be concerned and aware and still allow yourself to enjoy life for an hour.

I hate to say it, but I think Stephen Hawking is wrong about this. If anything, Trump has been an inoculation. People see Trump and run screaming the opposite way. Trump single-handedly prevented the rise of far-right nationalism in the EU and I think he’ll accomplish something similar here. His withdrawal has if anything spurred concern about global warming. And if anyone thinks our red states are going to go all oily and coal-burning, think again. Alternate energy is becoming big business in the red states. And like any other big business…they lobby. Indeed lists 345 open jobs in alternative energy in Arizona, 197 in Florida. Arizona is second only to California in its adoption of solar energy, according to the EIA.

He’s also wrong in that it’s already too late. Nothing we can feasibly do now will prevent runaway global warming. We’ve quite simply waited too long and done too little. It’s coming. What will be needed are terra-forming technologies to interfere with that, not merely to prevent it. India has been the leader in this effort, but it’s received global interest in the past year or so.

Oh yes…and acid rain? It actually reduces global warming.

Well if we are really going extinct and if the world is really coming to an end so far as we are concerned (the planet will still be here after we’re gone;) then we really should concentrate on being alive right now.

That’s always the best thing - to be fully alive every moment but especially if it’s all going to disappear.

“No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.” – H.L. Mencken

As true today as it was when Mencken wrote it on September 19, 1926 in the Chicago Tribune.

Me too. Armageddon might be kinda fun, in an auto-erotic, belt around your neck looped over a shower rod sort of way. I say let’s hope Hawking is spot-on!!

Acid! Mushrooms! Peyote!
