Discussion: Stephen Colbert Gives Jeb! Some 'Trumpier' Debate Prep

Discussion for article #240252

Not even Stephen could pump life into anything as brain dead as Jebthro’s campaign.

Colbert gave JEB! a short time to make his campaign talking points, and then he proceeded to show Bush why he was clearly out of his league. It was deftly done, and JEB! never had a chance.

So glad Colbert is back. I feel better now.

Jeb and his supporters have the momentum now and they are not letting up…

I wasn’t in love with his opening monologue and the bit with the satanic figure was lame but his interviews were good. The interview with Jeb is the best thing that has happened to Jebs sleepy campaign.

Hillary could have had that slot but her campaign turned Colbert down. Frankly the more I think about team Hillary turning that opportunity down the more I fall into dismay. That was a dumb move made by a dumb campaign run by dumb advisors. Hillary needs a splash. The first Colbert show could have given the splash she needs.

You know Hillary is giving the impression that she is the next Martha Coakley or maybe Robin Carnahan.

The Jebster acted like he had soiled himself…

Jeb grew an exclamation mark instead of a spine. It won’t work. He has to change his last name to McKinley.

I think the Oreo bit was slightly over the top, but Trump video has to be catnip for comedians.

It struck me very forcefully, too. I have no investment in a Fallon vs. Colbert comparison, nor is it any kind of really determinative event. Not important, in itself.

But it seemed to sum up the utter fecklessness of the Clinton candidacy. Why, for instance, a substanceless and stupid email issue is hurting her so much.

She’s just not a very good politician.

Colbert - still funny, even when nervous. Funny enough to make Jeb almost seem like he has a personality.

I can’t stay awake that late to watch but a friend told me this morning, his show was just like the Colbert Report which makes me happy. I was concerned a different format wouldn’t work. Good for Stephen. What a brilliant mind

Perhaps she didn’t want to follow Jeb. I think this constant picking at everything she does or doesn’t do is really getting old.

It’s hurting her so much because no matter how many different times and different ways she’s tried to turn the page the media insists on coming back to the email non-scandal. She’s given speech after speech, done two interviews this week alone, and all the media oxygen is focused on the email scandal.

She’s also got 17 opponents on the Republican side who bring it up in the most dire terms possible, often suggesting she’s going to prison and that her arrest is imminent.

Probably the biggest problem in this whole mess is the media. This is a non-scandal, and they damn well know it, but it plays into their “Clinton’s are shady and not to be trusted” narrative. They’re going to keep beating the drum every time a new stock of emails is released. This is the same shit they pulled with Whitewater, Travelgate, Benghazi, and all the other Clinton involved non-scandals, and they’ve been doing it for 25 years. It’s why I think HRC is so guarded.

I fell asleep during Jeb!'s segment. I just dozed off and woke up right before the musical number.

Ya think? She will not win at this rate.

And Wow! I’ve been lied to again! I thought Jeb was the smart one. What a cold fish. Those glasses…

He made some tweaks, which is good. My impression is he’s going to have musical guests every night, which is good for all sorts of reasons. I enjoyed it.

Next week- Bernie Sanders is going to be on!

The email server isn’t hurting Hillary as much as the New York Times reporters want us to believe. What is hurting Hillary is her campaign’s utter inability to get out of her way and her total unwillingness to push them aside. I heard the other day that the campaign was planning opportunities for Hillary to be spontaneous. Think about that for a second, they are planning spontaneity. Anything strike you as odd about that? If she wants this liberal’s vote she is going to earn it. I want to see some fire in her belly.

I think what’s hurting Clinton is the fact that she is not a very good campaigner. Despite 2008, she comes across as less than authentic, less than approachable, less than passionate, less than interested…basically, she comes across as less than a lot of things when she actually starts campaigning.
