Discussion for article #244088
Sorry Stephen but on this we disagree. I find NOTHING redeeming about this tumor of a human called Trump.
It is appealing from a social science point of view, I agree.
That Trump has said so many horrible things about so many different groups and topics that have resonated with a portion of the population is at once appealing and frightening.
Historians will look at this campaign and its after-math as one of the low points of American history and, potentially, leading to the destruction of the US as a world leader and shining example of democracy, but from a social science point of view, it will make for fascinating study for a long time to come.
Stephen Colbert recognizes Trump as a fellow comedic genius. Trump is running a perfect parody of a political campaign. Surely, he will let us all in on the joke soon.
Unless Trump wins the presidency, I donāt think historians will give a ratās ass about him.
This has the same effect on me as when Josh M. waxed profound about Brietbartās legacy. Hard to appreciate for us media laymen.
Whatās worse than Trumpās success is imagining how heās one more tumbler clicking into place for our doom. You can see in him one part of the final combination of a megalomaniac oligarch emperor seizing control of the US with a few more turns of the dial.
I know a number of assholes that people seem to really like, and I think hmmā¦ just one of lifeās mysteries.
Sorry Stephen, but In your effort to appeal to a broader (read dumb-downed) audience ā you lost your edge and with it your credibility. I can barely stand to watch your show now ā its just so much fluff and is barely funny. It breaks my heart because you were someone we could count on to expose hypocrisy. Instead, you sat there like a idiot when you had Trump on your show and played nice with this wretched, racist man. It was shameful.
āBut there is something really hopeful about the fact that, well, 36 percent of the likely voters want him so the people in the machine donāt get to say otherwise.ā
This is asinine. 36% of the likely voters are shit-flinging ignoramuses who would be happy shredding the Constitution and replacing it with the latest pronouncements of Ken Ham.
Does anyone seriously doubt that Trump will stop with Muslims? Or women? Or Mexicans? Or the disabled?
Or disabled Mexican Muslim women?
Iām waiting for him to drop all pretense and go all Gordon Gekko:
āHate, for lack of a better word, is good. Hate is right. Hate works. Hate clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the American spirit.ā
And then his GOP polling numbers will soar even higher.
I liked SC better when he was a pretend RWāer.
Donāt be too sure about that.
His campaign has uncovered a very ugly underbelly of Americanism post 9/11. This emotion has been seething for more than a decade. Trump has given voice to this ugly underbelly.
I donāt see him being dismissed to the dustbin quite that easily.
ācomedic geniusā overstates things at least as much as calling Trump a politician.
Trumpās appeal lies critically in his projecting NOT as a politician. Sure, he projects as an egomaniacal rascist jerkwad of a self-centered asshole windbag, but he executes on that so well, so NATURALLY, that, to a percentage of reflexively authoritarian under-educated, reasoning-limited denialist white working class American shit-for-brains likewise reflexively a-holish nativist nitwit bullies unhappy with being denied the ability to live in the past with a white daddy preznit producing the illusion of a White House based on 24/7 Leave It To Beaver, Father Knows Best, Happy Days reruns and deeply angered by how their preferred authoritarian political party facilitates a Muslim Kenyan fascist commie baby-killing gay-marrying uppity blah in continuing to soil their precious shining house on the hill, heās their dream candid.
Reaching, Steve
Hitler built the autobahn (which I used at least 1,000 times)
Trujillo put the Dominican Republic on a debt-free footing in the early 1940s
The Allies could not have defeated the Nazis without Stalin
Does nothing to alter the profound evil of these men.
Addendum:
By the way, Steve, Trump will market your opinion in ways which will make you regret ever having said it
I thought it was a mistake for him to do this show in the beginning.
Personally, I find the image of the GOP Party Elders tossing and turning in bed at night wondering how the hell to stop Big Door entertaining as hell.
Ex-Singer Henry Rollins is quite right when he said Trump doesnāt WANT to be president, heās just a billionaire throwing a hissy fit.
Big Door is fully capable of getting on the stage at the GOP Convention, turning down their nomination and calling them all ālosers.ā But I donāt think it will get that far.
ā36 percent of the likely voters want himā
PLEASE! That is 36% of Republican voters. Not all of us. Only the GOP. Not 36% of Americans. Not 36% of all voters. Just 36% of the Fox-watching, Breitbart-deranged, climate-change-denying REPUBLICANS!
There you go. A lot of Big Doorās support comes from people who donāt regularly vote or who have never voted before. Most of those enjoying Trumpās run are enjoying it the same way people enjoy a snooty customer in a restaurant getting a bowl of hot soup spilled in his lap.
To be more precise, any person running with the Republican nomination is going to get 40% of the vote, if only because 40% of the voting public refuses to vote for the other guy.
