Discussion: State Supreme Court Races Emerge As Another Front In Redistricting Wars

I wonder how the GOP will cheat should they lose the WI Supreme Court election. What kind of electoral/legislative shenanigans will they pull? I am sure they will be very creative.

I have friends in Milwaukee of which the wife is a ferocious Democratic volunteer. She’s been hyper active ever since they moved there from Oregon only to see Scotty Walleye elected.

She’s working the polls today and woe unto any fool who tries to pill a fast one in her vicinity.

Go Les GO!!!

For long years, through gerrymandering and voter suppression tactics, they’ve been waging a stealthy war on democracy. Well, democracy has announced that it’s noticed, and intends to return fire.

The very idea that a majority of votes should net more than a third of seats. What kind of evil tricks are democrats trying to pull? It’s as if they thought their votes should count as much as those of Real Americans.

Republican jurists have taken it upon themselves to legislate from the bench, which is why McConnell has been busy stuffing the federal courts with unqualified conservative judges.

They resemble umpires, as Judge Roberts once compared himself, only in the sense that umpire is on the take and rewarding his benefactors with blatantly egregious calls against the other side.

Most cases are in state court - something like 95%. The more partisan political pressure is applied to elected judges, the worse the outlook for justice. I worked for courts, federal and state, almost 40 years. Every judge has predispositions. The good ones realize it and try to distance themselves and find the law. The bad ones go straight to the ‘desired’ result and then figure out how to get there. And more and more that result will be decided by holding a finger up to the political wind. This trend stinks. Read the Federalist Papers for a basic explanation and take it from there. The judiciary is not supposed to be the third political branch, but it’s rapidly becoming just that nationally and state by state.

with Walker tweeting Monday about a sinister “master plan to gerrymander Democrats into long-term power.”

GOP projection at its finest…

Unfortunately it looks like we’ve lost this race by a couple of thousand votes. Barring a recount upset, an extremist Republican who compares homosexuality to bestiality has just been elected onto the state Supreme Court.

Very depressing. Could be horribly consequential. Too early to say what happened here. Apparently the GOP turnout was simply very high.

Wisconsin is going to be the toughest Rust belt state to flip next year. Stoking Ds to come out is one thing. But how do you stop GOP turnout?

I was hoping after Walker left the progressive roots would show bak up. I guess not. Bummer

This race proves that Dems have a ceiling with white voters and really need to invest in POC voters to win statewide on a consistent basis. They beat the much tougher Walker a few months ago b/c of high turnout in Milwaukee. It would suggest that Dems ought to be looking at female and POC candidates for their Presidential ticket. It doesn’t matter who is the person with the R after their name, they’re getting 55% to 62% of the white vote. You need to make that ground up with POC voters and dilute the GOP percentage of white voters by turning out low propensity younger white voters, particularly females.
