Agree completely. The folks who want us to call the fight a “crusade” and the opposition “radical Islamic terror” are also authoritarian bigots who want to subjugate anyone who won’t bow to them. The difference is the terrorists don’t have state power, and the “crusaders” do.
I think the point is the “West” unleashed the “East”. Had the USA and it’s allies not taken Osama bin Laden’s bait and avoided invading and destabilizing that part of the world the dictators and strong men that had it under control would still doing so. It’s hard to disagree with that. Insurgency and religious extremism are not new in the Middle East and Central Asia. There’s been 1000’s of years of it there. The only way to curtail it is with a brutal iron fist. Like Quaddfi’s or Hussein’s. That’s why were coming to see Syria as savable only if we let Assad back in to run the place. Well we all know about Trump talk. ISIS is in remission right now but there is no cure. It’s back as soon as we let our guard down. It’s a perpetual obligation. Like we needed that.

I suspect that the Iranian people – an educated, modern people who even let women into positions of power – in 1979 would disagree with you. As would the Kurds, the Iraqis who died in gas attacks or had their water reservoirs drained. Or the people who live in Syria under Assad. Or any Afghani person ever. Israelis and Palestinians might disagree, as well.
