Discussion: State Dept.: US Supports Catalonia Staying As 'Integral Part Of Spain'

Do we still even have a State Department? Color me surprised…

Spain lost the high ground on this with their heavy-handed suppression of the vote. Visca Catalunya as far as I’m concerned.

When South Carolina succeeded from the Union diarist Mary Chesnut said it was too small for a republic and too large for a insane asylum. Hope this is not the same.

If Catalonia can secede and gain independence, then let’s hope Texas does same ASAP!

And I fully support Dear Leader plunging into a catatonic state…

Spain versus Stephen Maturin? We already know that story…

It was a vote that had been ruled illegal by the supreme court, and as such the pro-spain people did not vote. There were all kinds of irregularities with the vote, there was no control of who voted or how many times, imagine something organized by Chris Kobach.

Catalunya is going nowhere for a few reasons:

a) Lack of support among EU countries
b) Lack of support within Spain
c) Lack of support from the local business community, many firms are already relocating their registered offices to other parts of spain
d) And not least, because the Catalans are bunch of wusses that are unwilling to back their demands with violence, there is a reason as to why most of latin america speaks castillian and not catalan. Catalans of 500 years ago did not like fighting, just like the catalans of today.

Trump and Tillerson discussing the Administration’s need to make a statement after Putin’s success in Catalonia, so that it does not appear that Trump is complicit at this delicate, precarious moment for the Trump.

Tillerson: Then it would appear we are at an impasse…
Trump: Yes, the press is so unfair, I cannot compete with their integrity and they cannot compete with my brains.
Tillerson: You’re that smart? (Fucking Moron)
Trump: Let me put it this way, you’ve heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Tillerson: Yes
Trump: Morons
Tillerson; (Fucking Moron)

I believe people said that about the English colonies in North America at one point as well.

As for “d” on your list: most of Latin America speaks español not castellano. And Spanish not Portuguese because of an agreement between Spain and Portugal about their spheres of influence (think Sykes-Picot), not because of the slanderous charge of Catalan cowardice.

Español = Castellano. Español is the “official” name, but usually in the context of other languages spoken in Spain is referred with it’s “real” name: “Castellano”. The official languages of Catalunya are Catalá & Castellá although sometimes they call it “Espanyol”.

Anyways, ever since Fernando & Isabel united the Kingdoms of Aragon (which included the County of Barcelona) and Castilla y Leon, Fernando had trouble raising troops in Aragon which had a different set of laws and the “Cortes” could tell the King to take a hike and frequently did. So Fernando relied on Castilian and Castilian speaking peoples from southern spain to man his armies for his Kingdom in Southern Italy and from those peoples the conquistadores and colonists the “Indias” came from.
