Discussion: State Dept: North Korea Backed Out Of Secret Meeting With Pence Last Minute

As I read what both governments said before, during and after the time Pence was at the Games, I cannot see that a meeting was actually arranged, confirmed or scheduled, or “backed out of.” The US and Pence say so, but credibility is a problem for the Trump administration. I think it’s just as likely that our government is spinning a tale to try to make North Korea look bad and Pence look tough. Show us the emails, texts, letters, notes of conversations about the “meeting”, if any.

Pure fiction, from start to finish.

And this is how low we’ve been brought: North Korean pronouncements are more credible than our own.

I am not a fan of the NK regime, but I can’t believe they had agreed to this. They were/are in a better position now with South Korea. Their participation in the games certainly gave a positive spin to their standing. Then when I heard that pence was taking warmbier…I knew there was no way any talks would happen. While I’m sorry for the family and the kid didn’t deserve to die, he was an example of American conservative hubris at its stupidest. His father had no place at the games with pence.

There was never a meeting.

This is merely a desperate attempt by the WH, and/or Pence specifically to try and distract from the absolute clusterfuck of the last week with a “Look!!! We’re totally serious people, with totally serious goals!!! Aw shucks, too bad North Korea didn’t play along, then you’d have seen how totally serious and totally presidential this Administration and Pence is!!!”

It is entirely possible that NK did agree, but the plan was always to pull out and embarass Pence and therefore Trump.

Loss of face is a huge thing in that corner of the world. It would be a (not so) subtle slap in the (Mal)administration’s face.

Fake plans, fake meeting, fake VP!

The North is trying to drive a wedge between the U.S. and South Korea–with a big assist from the Trump/Pence team of foreign-policy geniuses. Also, it’s working.

Fake president. But real vice.

Could it have been discussed and then canceled after Pence behaved like such a jerk?

Could be. Can’t notch this one up as a success for the diplomacy of making faces and being rude and publicly shaming.

NK deserves the shaming but it is not a productive way to induce engagement in talks.

The Penceface is a potent weapon and should only be deployed when absolutely necessary. Actually, it reminds me of a character in one of Thomas Pynchon’s novels–a psychiatrist who cures his patients by making particular faces at them. Pence is the foreign-policy equivalent, I guess.
