Discussion: Spike Lee Joins Growing Boycott Of Oscars Over Diversity Of Nominees

Discussion for article #244827

Rich people faking outrage.

I certainly am not a qualified movie critic. That said, I watched all the nominated movies. "Concussion “really was good, the acting by everyone in the movie was first rate. It’s one of the few if I had payed to watch it, I’d feel good about spending the money. I also watched “Creed” for free. I wanted my time back after watching it. I don’t understand how Sylvester Stallone could be nominated for anything. I also watched 20 minutes of “Legend” for free, I could not stomach another minute. Waste of time. As for the Hateful Eight, while Kurt had the big mustache, he acted in another western movie called " Bone Tomahawk”. I liked it better than the hyped, gory one.

I agree. Another great movie was Straight Outta Compton

Come on Darcy. This has nothing to do with rich black folks complaining. I don’t care if he’s rich. He is correct. You have lived in the south too long

in artistic endeavors, it’s difficult to straight out compare one performance to another. So it’s very difficult to claim racism. But when you look at it in the aggregate, it’s hard to believe minority talent isn’t being discounted.

Spike’s mad because the Academy consistently doesn’t appreciate his offerings.

So Spike got snubbed by the Academy for Do The Right Thing – and he’s still pissed. He knows better than anyone that the Academy Awards have nothing to do with artistic worthiness. Its all about marketing and profit potential. Bankability is the main reason his future projects get funded or not. That said, he should be proud from an artistic point of view that his films are not Academy darlings. If a film wins Best Picture – in most cases, it tends to mean that its a piece of pablum that will be forgotten in a couple of years. Lee has produced some classics – Do the Right Thing was a near perfect, brilliant film and should have been recognized by his Academy peers – but note, that same year, these old farts didn’t vote for Goodfellas or Scorcese either. Do we even know what film and/or director won in 1990? I could not remember and when I looked it up, I realized that I’d never bothered to see it.

My husband, who normally does not pay attention to much, said yesterday, “That’s weird.”

The year “Do The Right Thing” was nominated, it was up against “Driving Miss Daisy” (which won best picture) and it’s direct competitor in Best Screenplay was “Dead Poets Society” so yeah not exactly “a forgotten piece of pablum”

Heck even when it comes to another nod Do the Right Thing got Best supporting actor that went to Denzel Washington for “Glory”

The year Goodfellas was nominated it lost to “Dances With Wolves”

Overlooked in this is the fact that Eddie Redmayne - a white male - got a nod for playing a trans woman. As though there were no white trans women actors out there.

It isn’t just black actors who are feeling the snub. It’s just taking black activists and actors to point out the Wonder Bread similarity of the Academy voters and who gets nominated, AND be heard when doing so.

It would be nice if Mister Lee would tell us what an acceptable number would be.

Per capita in the USA?

My bad – wikipedia wrong year. "Best Screenplay was “Dead Poets Society” so yeah not exactly “a forgotten piece of pablum” Thanks though – I was not wrong about the pablum.

Do you harbor the same criticism of Jeffrey Tambor for playing the role of Maura Pfefferman?

While I agree that hollywood needs more diversity. Mr. Lee has been blaming racism for his mediocre movies since the late 90s.

Hateful Eight is just like every other motion picture by that idiot that used to work at Video Archives. Its always a derivative mashup of kung fu, blaxploitation and the soup du jour which in this case is a stupid western.

Spike Lee is and always had been about Spike Lee. He’s made some really good movies but not in a long long time. It’s about Spike not getting nominated, not another black actor.

But I love Chris Rock and hate to miss him.
