Discussion: Spicer: Trump Won't Ban Individual News Outlets From White House

Forget about this whole “conversations” bullsh*t; it’ll mostly be questions pre-submitted to him and answered via YouTube.

Oh, and FYI: last night, my Twitter feed picked up an interesting bit of news: Jared Kushner (aka Mr. Ivanka) made some deal with Sinclair Broadcasting whereby that channel will gain automatic access to Rump’s proclamations.

EDIT TO ADD: At first, I knew I’d heard the name of the company but couldn’t quite place my finger on it. THIS was the chop shop that ran anti-Kerry propaganda in 2004…

“We have a respect for the press when it comes to the government, that that is something that you can’t ban an entity from," Spicer said, as quoted by Politico. “That’s what makes a democracy a democracy versus a dictatorship.”

Just lost the use of my left side - I think I may have had an irony stroke - someone please call 911…

In related news, Trump spox says no one will be banned from collecting uneaten, but still consumable food from The Trump Grill dumpster.

Thanks, Sean. We understand that under the current laws we’re not a dictatorship but sometimes it’s nice just to hear it out loud. Like saying “I love you” now and then just because. Say, how’s the rescheduling coming along for that conflict of interest dilly-o?

As a general proposition, given the 1st amendment which says the government cannot limit free speech, could the administration ban individual press outfits without being in violation of the constitution?

I really don’t know and I don’t think the question has come up but the president does not own the White House - we do. We let him or her live there and I don’t think they could do this if the press fought back and took them to court.

I am waiting to hear what role Jeff Gannon will have in the new administration. Have they picked a Press Secretary yet?

On the one hand, I sniff a clever turn of phrase by which he means there will be no press briefings and the room will be used to store Melania and Ivanka’s tanning beds.

On the other one, Sean Spicer is a sniveling little coward who lies more than Nixon.

Just one more thing to keep track of. This administration is going to be exhausting.

Ok, everyone is worried about a terrorist attack that unites the country around trump.

I don’t think it would have that affect. trump is not George Bush. I think it would have the opposite affect - people would want trump’s head - since the news is full of the fact that he ignores briefings.

I honestly think it would bounce back on him squarely. I could be wrong but I don’t think so. W was an acceptable president even though he was a minority president. trump is not acceptable and I’ve never seen people so disgusted and upset by an election outcome and I don’t think that will change.

White House media credentials are processed through the Periodical Press Gallery in the House which is well known for politicizing applications. My former progressive outlet was turned down for both congressional and White House credentials during the Bush Administration ostensibly because publishing online-only wasn’t considered credible by the blue hairs. In reality, it was purely ideological and we had no recourse.

You can drive a truck through the rules so if the WH wants to award/deny credentials they can find a way: https://periodical.house.gov/accreditation/rules-and-regulations

So be prepared to see Milo Yiannopolous perched on Helen Thomas’ front row seat. /retch

Not sure but some of the seats are held by a ‘pool’ of three media outlets that share information. It’s not like he can control the news completely. I guess if he starts killing journalists, that is another story.

Sounds familiar.

Truth and propriety were not always priorities for those who wrote for ‘Vőlkischer Beobachter’. Hitler’s failed Beer Hall Putsch was portrayed as a triumph; the Weimar government was labelled a pawn of Jews and Masons while the most senior member of the army, General Hans von Seekt, was vilified simply for having a Jewish wife.

…Once Hitler had gained power on January 30th 1933, ‘Vőlkischer Beobachter’ served the sole purpose of pushing home Nazi ideology. Controlled by Joseph Goebbels it only printed what Goebbels knew Hitler would appreciate and approve of. Hence, it was the Jews that causedKrystalnacht (Night of the Broken Glass) and it was Rőhm’s treachery that led to the Night of the Long Knives. As World War Two approached, it was the Poles who violated German soil and murdered German border guards. During World War Two, the ‘Vőlkischer Beobachter’ only ever published good news or re-wrote what was obviously bad news as good news. Goebbels control over the printed word was total and right up to the end of the war, the ‘Vőlkischer Beobachter’ claimed that the Nazis would win.

Edit. Seems to me that we are now “Post Godwin”

I knew there were press pools but I don’t know all the ins and outs of how the White House press corps operates.

He really can’t control the news completely unless he declares the constitution null and void and I don’t think that’s going to happen. I don’t think the GOP would let him go that far. But that doesn’t mean they can’t get sneaky about it.

OMG you’re right - they will give every insane right wing fake news idiot WH credentials - Alex Jones will be in the front row. He will call on 10 insane people who will ask him why democrats hate America and then one or 2 legitimate newspeople who will be booed by half of the room when they ask a serious question.
