Have heard various reports that US Marshals are not enforcing the court orders directed at various airports/detentions. And that this order to not enforce the court rulings is coming from DOJ. Anyone know anything about that? That’s really the key tipping point between democracy and backsliding into Putin style dictatorship.

Stay of enforcement yes. They won’t rule on the EO until a few weeks from now. My question relates to whether this should be open and shut with respect to applying the EO to permanent residents. To me, if the Green Card means anything, it means that the government cannot abuse your rights for any arbitrary reason just because you’re not a full citizen. Denying entry to a Green Card holder from Syria should be no more or less valid than denying entry for a US Citizen w/valid US passport returning from those countries. Otherwise, the Green Card means nothing and the rule of law means little.

For other visa status holders (student visas, H1s and other visas) I think the same rules apply. You should have to have done something to violate your conditions of stay in order to have rights limited.

Whenever they say “keep America safe,” I always think of the line from “The Bourne Ultimatum” when they are manipulating David Webb to force him to join the black ops program, “…to save American lives.” It’s the same hyper-nationalistic, cynical twaddle that’s utterly meaningless, but it “sounds” good.
