“The Republican Party does not prey on people’s prejudices… This is the party of Lincoln.”

Puke.

Why is it that Paul Ryan even had to say this? The GOP is against diversity. Look at a picture of the convention where they always put the camera on the few people of color in the crowd. They are not diverse. They are the party of old white people. They will all vote for Trump if he is the nominee.

The Windsock Speaketh!

@whiteb - Because Ryan knows part of the reason he and Romney lost was because too many people forgot “quiet rooms”. Of course now they don’t even pretend to consider it.

He didn't even avert his gaze as he mouthed that.

“If a person wants to be a nominee of the Republican Party there can be no evasion and no games. They must reject any group or cause that is built on bigotry,"

So wait…how can someone be the nominee of the Republican Party if they have to reject groups built on bigotry? Or is his thinking that because the Republicans were originally built to oppose slavery, it’s ok if they later adopted bigotry for political purposes?

Either way, this is a big mistake by Ryan. He’s about to find out that there are more bigots in the GOP than there are Ayn Rand fans, and that the real reason most Republicans oppose big government isn’t because conservatives want to promote the individual, but because big government helps black people. Trump has tapped into something, by wooing the bigots away from fiscal conservatives; and that’s what really has the party scared.

After all, Republican policies hurt poor white people as much as anyone, and the only reason they stick around is because they hate liberals. What happens when they find out that they can hate liberals without cutting taxes or deregulating?

“If someone wants to be our nominee they must understand this,” Ryan said.

So when that fucker Trump gets the Nomination, you are going to make him do WHAT?

Um, no. Poor white’s disdain for blacks, foreigners and non-Christians takes precedence over their self interest. White bigots would happily sleep under a bridge if doing so guaranteed in return black people had to sleep in a drainage ditch.

"The Republican Party does not prey on people's prejudices."
He went on to say, "Indeed, we feed and nurture prejudices, and use them to political advantage to get low-information people to vote against their own interests. It's probably the single thing we do best."

What do you mean, no? I wrote the same thing you did, that Republican policies are bad for poor white people; but that they support these policies because of their hatred. And so that’s what’s good about Trump, that he’s showing bigots that they can be bigots without cutting taxes for the rich and deregulating. Sure, maybe Trump would do those things as president, or maybe not. He’s a pragmatic showman, not an ideologue. And that’s what makes him a safer choice than the other Republicans running, since the only thing he really cares about is his popularity; so he’ll do whatever it takes to remain popular.

Because in truth, the bigots don’t really care what happens to black people, since they don’t really know many black people. They just want a president who talks tough and doesn’t apologize. Republicans have been duping them for years with empty dog whistles, but Trump is giving them what they want. After all, welfare and immigration laws don’t even work the way these people imagine. They’re not angry at a real grievance or have real demands. They just want someone to make them feel better, by giving them excuses for why they’re not successful.

But if Trump somehow made it as president, these people are going to ignore his spending and deficits just as they did with Bush. They don’t really care what’s going on in the world. They just like to bitch.

Yeah, when I think of Lincoln, restricting voting rights is the first thing that comes to mind.

Y’all were the Party of Lincoln when Lincoln was alive. Since then - not so much. Certainly not since you decided you wanted Southern voters. Your bigotry is only slightly more subtle than Trump’s, Ryan.
