Horrifying storm. I hope the loss of life is minimal, but in realty it could easily number in the thousands.
That’s a scary looking hurricane.
After it leaves Mexico it heads up thru Texas, so I hope all those good Christians that deny global warming paint some lamb’s blood on the doorposts and pray to the Almighty that this thing passes them over them in a hurry. But if it doesn’t, I wonder if Pat Robertson will come out and say they had it coming to them by an angry and vengeful Gawd for all their sins. I seem to remember him saying those types of things when it came to natural disasters. Funny how Gawd only took his vengeance out on everyone that wasn’t some kind of devout Christian too. Well, cross your fingers Texas and see how that works. Either that, or be smart and get ready…please, be prepared. Mexico is already looking like they’re headed for a world of hurt from this monster.
That was a rather callous thing to say when it’s possible that a few thousand people are going to die from the storm in the next 24-36 hours. The average people of America, and certainly the people of Mexico have no influence on their government’s actions regarding climate change.
It should dissipate quite rapidly, actually. Once it runs into the mountains inland it loses all its fuel and peters out quickly:

About 36-48 hours, in central mexico.
That’s good to know. I was watching local weather this morning and they were describing the path and the intensity. It sounded like they weren’t sure how much rain would pour into Texas as the hurricane came into the state. I know the winds will be less but it still sounded like a deluge with the potential to cause a lot of harm. Remember, New Orleans wasn’t hit as hard by Katrina as it was by the surge in water that rushed in and broke the levies, doing most of the ultimate damage and terrible loss of life.
Yeah, that is what I am hearing too. Not just mountains, but very dry mountains.
Still, its going to be a huge disaster for the coastal regions when it hits.
I hope the Mexican gov’t gets on the stick and evacuates all they can… Save people! Buildings can be replaced but not people. I live very near the Mexican border and we in AZ will likely see a lot of rain from this horrible event.
My heart goes out to those in the path of this monster.
Yeah, this is very serious business and it blew up extremely quickly, what’s called explosive intensification. Went from just a garden-variety hurricane to Extremely Bad in less than 24 hours. So these folks probably are being caught totally unaware at the last moment.
The Sierra Madre Mountains are just inland from the coast where this storm will hit. CNN estimated a 30 foot storm surge. Geesh!
And 20 inches of rain. That means mudslides and whole villages wiped off the map. Those mountains are quite steep and many homes are inaccessible (only by foot) relatively in the best of times. This is seriously bad for them.
Pacific hurricanes tend to have that beautifully symmetric makeup that the Atlantic storms don’t. I expect that’s because the storms form in areas where there aren’t large-ish islands to mess things up like there are in the Caribbean.
And further to your later comment, that storm is going to pump a buttload of water into Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
On the serious side: This could kill a lot of people, and Mexico is poorly equipped to handle such things. Plus, I have a timeshare in Cabo San Lucas, which is still recovering from last year’s hurricane. I’d hope this hits land in a place that will cause minimal damage.
On the snarky side: Donald Trump could prevent this, you know. Just ask him.
I’ll never forget the depraved old Fundie’s rants about Katrina and “…God’s wrath on New Orleans’ wickedness.” And the French Quarter was relatively unscathed. Looked like Gawwwwd’ had a really bad aim. In Haiti it was, of course, because of voodoo. …and on and on. And he actually said that he prayed Hurricane Gloria away from Virginia Beach, his home base. No joke…he said that.
And…Robertson, of course, never mentions all that sin and iniquity in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas…etc. which are ravaged yearly by some of the world’s most violent storms and tornadoes.
Evidently, Gawwwwd’ “judgment” and wrath are reserved only for Democratic areas of any state in the horridly twisted theology of Rev. Pat.
Are you in any way in the path of this thing? If so, please take care.
I’ve never experienced a hurricane. I’ve had lots of experience preparing for tornadoes, which always feel like hit or miss, and even tornadoes have gotten larger and more intense over the years. There’s only so many things you can do in the event of a tornado. But you usually always stay in place. With hurricanes however, sometimes you evacuate…if you have time, transportation, a route, and a willingness to do so. Plus, if this thing got crazy-big in less than 24 hours, that’s even more worrisome and dangerous. Hurricanes seem so massive in doing such extreme damage over such a large land mass at once.
I honestly hope no one is hurt, harmed or killed by this monster…regardless of being called “callous” upthread by someone who obviously doesn’t know my heart or mind on this matter. In fact, I won’t even dignify that bullshit with a response. I hope it misses you darrtown…or is that “callous” to say, because honestly, if it misses you it will probably end up hitting someone else along its path instead…and I obviously wouldn’t want that to happen either. Sheesh. I’m done for now…
When we Americans start moving north to escape the scorching heat, drought, hunger, and death that will be caused by global warming, I hope the Canadians, for their own safety, check American party registrations to make sure they aren’t letting in any Republicans.
SR,
Mrs darr and I reside in Tucson, AZ. We are not in the direct path and may only get some rain. Yesterday the forcast had the storm heading north right at us but then it wasn’t a cat 5 or anything close to that. Yesterday everything changed when it crossed warm water from El Nino. It looks like this monster will go across Mex. to the north east toward the Texas Big bend country. I know the affected part of Mexico quite well having visited many times. This is not good. The problem for the affected villagers in Me. is there are places accessible only by foot. They will have no way to evacuate. That will only be possible for the larger coastal towns and cities. Manzanillo, Pureto Vallarta, Mazatlan all will be affected.
The average people of America…have no influence on their government’s actions regarding climate change.
Well yes, actually they do. It’s called voting.
