Discussion: South Florida Talks Secession, Citing Climate Change

Discussion for article #229198

South Florida’s our canary in the coal mine.

Too bad for them that their governor’s “not a scientist”.

These folks really don’t have a clue (DHAC).

Secession is an act of treason. Why would the USA want a group of proven treasonists to join the union?

What makes them think that removing themselves from the union would automagically appoint them statehood? Isn’t secession, by definition, REMOVING themselves form statehod?

For perspective, Miami-Dade County, of which South Miami is a part of, has a population of 2.617 million. The suburb of South Miami itself has a population of–wait for it–12,088.  Why should we even take notice of what a vice mayor of a tiny suburb is spouting off about?

I hate to break it to you Florida, but nothing is going to stop your state from first becoming a collection of islands, and then, finally disappearing beneath the waves. If we’d been working seriously on a solution for the past 30 years, it might have turned out differently, but frankly, it’s too late. Maybe in another couple hundred years, if we learn how to reverse the process, land will come back out of the sea.

Until then, our only hope is that is the Mantle heats, the tectonic plates will expand, and volcanic activity will increase, filling the upper atmosphere with particles to inhibit sunlight. Of course, this will be accompanied by more earthquakes, and who can guess if the impact will be sufficient, but hey, all you waterfront property owners–if you ain’t sold yet, prepare to get wet.

Well, he could lobby his stupid party to support a carbon tax for starters.

Those stupid AHoles don’t know the difference between

succeed and secede.

They are synonyms to them…

Secession is not an act of treason, which is the only crime defined in the US Constitution—read Article III, section 3, for the definition.

Secession is sedition, and it’s illegal.
This issue was settled conclusively in 1865.

Another foot of water, and water treatment stops working in southern Florida. Not much left of that 51st state thereafter.

Speaking of not having a clue.

They are not proposing removing themselves from the union.

They are proposing leaving the state of Florida to become another state. They would never leave the United States in the process - they would remain part of Florida, and part of the United States, until such time they would be admitted to the US as the 51st state.

That has happened before in US history. Maine was part of Massachusetts before it became a state. West Virginia and Kentucky were carved out of the state of Virginia. Tennessee was once part of North Carolina. Most of Alabama and Mississippi were once part of Georgia, and Alabama was carved out of the Mississippi Territory. The eastern halves of North and South Dakota were once part of the Minnesota Territory. Major parts of New Mexico and Colorado were once part of Texas.

“What has science done for me lately?” Gov. Scott

If a part of the United States wants to leave the United States, let them. Let them be on their own for a postal system, funding the cost of highways and all other infrastructure, immigration policies, healthcare systems, and every other thing a foreign country would need to handle on their own.

That is sad because I have property in Southern Florida. How much time do I have?

Actually if you have ever been in South Florida you must acknowledge that it is culturally much different than North Florida. One is part the old South and the other is an outpost of New York City. They are separated by a common language.

Any discussion of South Florida real estate makes me think of Groucho Marx in The Cocoanuts: “You can get any kind of a home you want. You can even get stucco. Oh, how you can get stucco!”

Who’s reponsible for your eyes, govenor?

Yes let the southern portion of the country join them. We need to take a giant chainsaw and make a cut up the western side of Tx, and then make a hard right at the top of the state and go straight across east to the Atlantic and just let that portion of the country float away.
