With a vote of 37 to 3 in the SC Senate to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds, and with a most likely similar result in the SC House coming up, looks to me the flag issue was more of a thorn in the side than something SC politicians really wanted to keep dealing with. As a matter of fact, all but 3 jumped on the occasion to finally remove it and be done with it.
Good. They can use it to drape the coffin that contains the hopes and dreams of the anti gay marriage assholes.

There has been a contingency of Democrats in the South Carolina legislature who have been trying to get a vote on this issue for years now. They could not even get a reading of the bill in committee prior to the massacre in Charleston. So, yes. being dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century is a perfectly apt way to describe what is happening here. This is by no stretch of the imagination a profile in the courage by the overwhelmingly Republican senate.

I live in the rural Georgia, about an hour and a quarter northwest of Atlanta. There are, contrary to what you may have thought, plenty of open-minded, tolerant people here. And then there are total clowns like this fool, who somehow stumbled his way into the state legislature and seems determined to record his ignorance and bigotry for perpetuity.

Let’s be honest. The flag only became a thorn in their side when the threat of lost business, the wave of national and international scorn, and–oh–the 9 dead people became a thorn in their side. Let’s not pretend any of them suddenly changed their beliefs without being prodded into it by their love of keeping their seat.

I suppose, based on the flag and various merchandise being dumped by all the big guys and widespread criticism, this isn’t really a surprise, but why in this fricking country did it take the massacre of nine innocents to make it happen?
As many others have said, it won’t erase racism, but not a few of those morons now understand that they are most definitely in the minority, and the rest of us are going to be more than happy to make those who fly that damn flag squirm.
And yes, those people are RACISTS.

That’s a remarkable historical rewrite, champ. You can’t look at this solely from the perspective of them doing the right thing now simply because it’s become so toxic that it’s in their best personal interests to cave in. It has taken years to break them of this. YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS. They’ve been flying that fucking thing at the state house as a symbol of their defiance of the civil rights movement, desegregation, etc., since 1962…FIFTY THREE YEARS OF PROUDLY “DEFYING” SOCIETAL NORMS AND PROGRESS. So yes, kicking and screaming, with the blood of thousands on their hands.

Exactly, it took the brutal murders of nine people, beloved and respected pillars of their community who were unusually above reproach, in a church during Bible study for the SC legislature to finally take up this bill after years and years of Democrats battling Republicans to get it taken down. It also took a murderer so full of undeniable rage toward people of color, a murderer whose motive was so completely unambiguous, particularly because of photos showing him draping himself in it, and making it nearly impossible for anyone to pretend that it isn’t the flag of hate. So, “dragged kicking and screaming” might even be an understatement.

No historical rewrites at all! Those who are taking down the flag now are not the same people who put it up 53 years ago and most likely than not, I haven’t check it, the vast majority of them weren’t even there when the flag was taken down from the Capitol dome and placed on a pole in the lawn 15 years ago. Political calculations from all involved? Perhaps for some. Kicking and screaming? Not a chance.
