Discussion: Some Black Detroiters Unhappy About Trump Visit: 'He Has No Clue'

“Carson said, adding that he hoped the visit would also leave the people Trump meets with a better sense of the candidate, who tends to be far less caustic in smaller settings than he appears on stage.” I think Trump is plenty caustic when it’s just his little fingers and his phone.

Simple question: What in his 70 years has he ever done to help black people? Absolutely nothing, in fact, he’s done quite the opposite. And now, he’s going to help blacks?

I hope they make him wear a scarlet letter “C” as he perfunctorily tours Detroit.

No softballs? I, for one, would like to see Trump pinned down and forced to answer questions about his motivations for seeking to delegitimize President Obama five years ago when he was the leading exponent of the insane birther/college transcripts conspiracy theories. “I don’t like to talk about that any more” is not acceptable.

trump has boatloads of nerve. He is a racist through and through taught to him by his father at an early age.

I wish someone would explain to me why he keeps focusing on black people in Michigan? Also what’s going to be his reaction when the black voters reject him

I don’t know anything about the churches in the area, but what’s to stop other churches from offering a welcome for Sunday for parishioners who don’t want to see Trump? Imagine he goes and only half the congregation shows up.

He’ll want them deported or killed.

The Big Dog is coming to town and he’ll put Trump right where he belongs - at the bottom.

I wonder if it will come up in the debates.

This visit is unlikely to increase Trump’s share of the black vote in Detroit. But that isn’t the point. He’s going to Detroit because with its high unemployment and poverty and crime, it comes closer than most places to fitting the hellish vision of black America that Trump has painted for his almost-all-white followers. Plus, he’s apparently found a minister who will follow his script, with a private interview, with questions given in advance and prepared answers.

So, my guess is the idea is much like the trip to Mexico – to show his hard-core followers that he’s not afraid to go into “the belly of the beast,” and to demonstrate that even though he’s said horrible things about this group of people, their leaders will still treat him with respect (which suggests to Trump supporters that he is a “strong leader” who is feared by his enemies and therefore given careful deference by them, which is the only kind of respect his authoritarian-follower supporters understand).

At the same time, he probably hopes that by offering “softening” rhetoric toward minorities, and the soothing optics of him peacefully attending a church service surrounded by nonwhites, he gives wishy-washy Trumpskeptical R-leaning suburban white married women voters (or whatever) an excuse to pretend he’s not the virulent racist he obviously is.

So I think, once again, this is not really about winning over black voters. They’re just being used as props in the ongoing Trumpian psychodrama.

Smart lady! Trump not seen as great white hope by blacks, their way too informed to buy that baloney.

That minister who is giving Trump his fake “interview” should be ashamed of himself. I’m sure at some level he knows the truth, but he’s probably a grifter himself, so it’s all good.

Everything he knows about The Blacks he got from watching Robocop.

The reason why he won’t release his tax returns is because he’s put billions into a cyborg army, which is why he claims all urban crime will end on his first day in office. That’s the only logical explanation for such a bold claim, unless you’re some kind of cynic and think Trump is being insincere.

And, unfortunately, unless Donald is pelted with objects that force him to leave the stage, the media will portray this as a magic moment for the Trump campaign. “How brave, open-minded and presidential he is!” I’m getting furious just thinking about it.

Trump is so delusional that when he tours Detroit he’ll say that he wants to build a wall around 8 Mile.

well, the chance of trump putting billions of his own money into anything is virtually nil. so i’m going to go with the door #2 insincerity thing.

BTW, i am ordering another bottle of the 4 peal watershed gin and am also going to try its big brother. thanks again for the tip. ed h.

i’ll explain it to you, if you’ll explain to me why he went to mexico telling them how much he loves them, and later that night rips them apart. the only logical answer is that the man is delusional.

Detroit is about 80 percent black, and many are struggling. Nearly 40 percent of residents are impoverished, compared with about 15 percent of Americans overall. Detroit’s median household income is just over $26,000 — not even half the median for the nation, according to the census.

While true, this info isn’t terribly helpful. The reason for 40% poverty and median income of $26K is that anybody with the capability to do so moves out of the city proper and into the surrounding suburbs. My suburb is 15% African American and the median income of black families is $89K, virtually the same as the median income of white families in the community.

Glad to hear it. I’ve been meaning to get to the other side of town to buy a few bottles directly from the distillery.

I’ve convinced you about the merits of Columbus booze, and I’m pretty sure I convinced everyone in the Jill Stein thread that C-bus pizza is the best. I guess I should start boosting Columbus’ premium peanut butter, Krema?
