I thought the story indicated that he didn’t apologize until he had told the lie for many years, and apologized only after someone else exposed the lie. That would probably justify someone shitting on him for the awful thing he did.

Personally, I suspect waiting for someone to expose him probably took its own toll on him during those years. Whether that was enough suffering is for someone besides me to decide.
