Discussion: Shutdown 'Sweeteners': How Congress Used Shutdown Deal To Cut More Taxes

Marcy Gordon, I’m guessing, is an AP writer. Where was this article a week ago? Also, aren’t there some serious fiscal implications? The US is in a benign late-business-cycle environment when the Congress should be shoving countercyclical tax increases as hard as they can. Instead, this. Defies logic.

Republicans call this a “cut” because they won’t be paying for it. The middle class will.

Congratulations, voters, you’ve inherited a new tax!

This is really the worst case outcome of the Trump administration (and I realize that’s saying something). It’s only a matter of time before the truly awful aspect of all these tax cuts becomes evident - the total destruction of US fiscal capacity.

The US is steadily eroding its own ability to deal with economic hardship in a time when (sane) economists point to the economic indicators and say “it’s recession time”. That’s a problem that affects the entire globe.

Pay with what? Devalued dollars? 60% of Americans will enter the next downturn/recession without substantial assets or savings. While assets adjust to currency shifts, wages not so much.

Looks like the Senate Democrats are getting ready to fold on protecting Dreamers anyway.

Ooooooo! Chuck Schumer is the the bestest, smartest, craftiest, leadery leader evah! NOT! How bad is he? He’s so bad that I now pine for the days of Harry “Punt on First Down” Reid…

Better sweeteners would be to restore the personal exemptions.
Lower the retirement age.
Open CHIP to all children.
Add a public option to Medicaid.

The dollar hit a three year low yesterday and it is falling again today.

To all the brilliant people who twisted themselves into pretzels spinning Shcumer’s cave into a winning strategy; no, they did not get a six year extension of CHIP funding by shutting the government down and holding firm. They had the 6 year funding offered by McConnell and Ryan on Friday before the shut down. I have no idea why TPM writers did not report this or did not know about it.
This is an excellent article by David Faris on the subject:

CNN reported before the shutdown that the Democrats were offered a six year funding deal for CHIP. Eugene Robinson at the WP repeated that claim yesterday in his column where he links to this CNN article:

Finding this out firms my notion that Republicans really did not want to be the party that took away health care for nearly 9 million children while giving huge tax cuts to the wealthy before the midterms

What are you talking about? These facts were widely reported - the offer of 6 years of CHIP funding was the GOP’s main point of leverage. You’re attempting to create conflict where none exists. I have not read a single article, on TPM or elsewhere, that makes the claim that the CHIP offer was only made post-shutdown. Perhaps you could provide a link to one to validate your claims?

Irresponsible criticism is every bit as harmful as propaganda. You’re insulting professionals based upon your strong feelings - and little else.

If they had the 6 year funding for CHIP before the shutdown, what did they accomplish by shutting down the government? They made no gains on DACA.
Please read the David Faris article. It is very well written and he makes many valid points.

You are perhaps unaware of the poison pills in the budget extension that Dems opposed. It was never about CHIP and DACA alone. Read more than Repug propaganda and get back to us. BTW we now have CHIP without the poison pills and DACA is now a clearcut defining issue that must be resolved promptly or more Repugs will be forced into retirement. The bad guys? They bought themselves another deadline in just 2 weeks without any workable plan! Seems like Dem winning to me.

This is false. You’ve set things up using a false argument to make your point. You don’t get to avoid the fact that you’ve used Hannity-like tactics to not counter people’s opinions, but to discredit them. I think Chuck made a difficult strategic decision, and in the long run I suspect it was the right call, as CHIP is now funded (a not unimportant thing, remember) and DACA now has to be debated on its own merits.

That’s my opinion. You don’t get to pretend it’s something else.

Obviously, you have no idea who David Faris is if you call him “Repug propaganda”. Eugene Robinson at the WP is a Republican troll also?
OK, I got it. Anyone who disagrees with you is a Republican troll.

Democrats were offered the 6 year CHIP funding before the shutdown.
You’re entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts.

So defunding Obamacare was a good thing? Per the article that this comment thread is attached to:

The bill enacted late Monday suspended three taxes that came in under President Barack Obama’s signature health care law: a tax on medical devices, one on high-cost health care plans offered by employers, and another on health insurance companies.

The Republicans were relieved when enough Democrats flipped and supported the spending bill so that the government could reopen. And, they were gleeful at the chipping away of the health care law by delaying or suspending the three taxes.

Sounds pretty poisonous to me…

Democrats in the Senate were rolled. Obamacare is being destroyed bit by bit by bit…

At no point did I imply otherwise - please feel free to quote me.

Your attempts to pretend that I’ve implied otherwise are due to your lack of confidence in the merits of your own arguments. These are Republican tactics, and you should be ashamed for attempting to employ them.
