Discussion: Should The Next D.C. Mayor Keep Rhee’s Successor?

Discussion for article #220990

I’m always stunned when the nattering classes think poorly prepared “outsiders” are just the trick to improve urban education. Consequently, urban educational systems endure clowns like Rhee, who had very little public school teaching experience and even less real administrative experience to lead the DC schools. Her successor has a bit more experience, but this pales in comparison to traditional urban educators.

Think of hiring public school educators as hiring surgeons: Do you want the fast track, non-traditionally prepared types, or do you want more carefully prepared and season professionals? If you care about improving urban education, you need to take a 30 year time-span. After decades of trying to improve things “right now” we have little to show for the fast-track efforts. Instead, talk to career educators, who have long-served the most needy of students, about what is needed (instead of the think tank and foundation hucksters).
