Discussion: Sheriff: Oregon Militiamen To Face Charges For Taking Over Federal Building

Quite correct. These people have violated federal laws and state and local law enforcement has no obligation to enforce federal law. The federal government has jurisdiction so if any enforcement is involved it will be the FBI, ATF, Federal Marshals, or, if the President decides to invoke the Insurrection Act, the 82nd Airborne. They have already violated federal law by taking over federal property without authorization and all the feds have to do is wait for them to walk out and arrest them. That’s why they are happy to let these people have press conferences and interviews; they are confessing to the crimes that they will be charged with. The videos will be played as evidence at their trials (at least for those who don’t cop a plea bargain and plead guilty).

Whatever they are charged with, I hope there are two outcomes: (1) guns confiscated and future background checks fail, (2) civil money penalties that puts liens on any property. I do hope those Bundy Bros realize the million that Daddy owes will be taken out of his estate (if it’s worth even that much).

If any of these thugs are ever convicted of a felony offense, seems to me that they give up the right to own firearms, correct?

Well, according to Bundy’s political philosophy, the Sheriff of the County is the all-powerful governmental unit. So Bundy is in trouble either way.

Good point…

They walk.

Whose was it? It’s not there now.

Sheriffs in the West are more important for law enforcement than they are in the East. I don’t think Sheriff Ward has anything to answer for. He did his job keeping peace when the insurrectionists were in Burns, and he stayed on the case in his jurisdiction. When the insurrectionists moved to the closed Malheur NWR Gift Shop, the matter was out of his jurisdiction and control. It became a federal matter.

What I say is that try as we do to weed out those unfit to serve with tests and boot camp occasionally a wingnut will slip through. But they’re typically caught later on when they start acting out like this Ritzheimer character.

Don’t confuse little boys who grow up playing soldier with the men and women who have served honorably.

Oh…and I hope they have someone there doing the daily foot check on them and make them take their meds.

It won’t take that long assuming they’re playing it for real, which I have no reason to believe. Day three of patrolling with little or no sleep; ‘standing to’ at 3am or other odd hours; etc.- they’ll lay down and not realize they slept until they find themselves cozy in a jail cell.

This is a bunch of overgrown children with access to firearms; and a poignant real-world example of privilege at work. If these men had been from a minority population or religion the building would still be on fire from all the ordinance poured down on them.

The best outcome here is ‘Team Bundy’ mishandles some explosives while tightly packed into their rebel base/gift shop, and this problem solves itself.

How many days has it been so far? I was out of the loop over the holidays, taking some vaca and avoiding the news cycle. Tear gas should have been used ont he very first day, IMnotsoHO. Ergo, I want to keep a running tally of how many days late we are in seeing a billowing cloud of noxious fumes wafting out of the windows of the building. I feel it makes for a good white privilege yard stick. So yeah, what day are we on?

Haha…hadn’t even thought that far ahead…hilarious. Like a schadenfreude-irony bomb going off in my head LOL

All I can say is this: Never underestimate the power of stupid.

“The bureau has assured me that those at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge will at some point face charges,”

Given that the federal government has yet to do a single fucking thing to Cliven Bundy or any of his armed thugs, this “assurance” is meaningless bullshit argle-bargle until it actually happens. I don’t think the Feds have the balls or the intent to actually do anything other than the gentlest slaps on the wrist, if that.

And now that the Oregon state police has admitted that they’re not even controlling access in or out of the refuge, the idea that these clowns are going to face any penalties at all just blew up. At most they’ll be asked to reimburse the facility for the toilet paper they used.

Nobody—NOBODY—at any level of the United States government—including the current President—gives a flying bloody fuck about any of this horseshit out west. If I were one of the Forest Service or BLM employees out west who are in daily danger of getting shot by these thugs, I would be enraged beyond description at the open, craven, gutless disinterest of the federal government in my safety as I carry out my job.

droppin’ a couple dozen pissed-off skunks on em’ from a hover-drone would surely hasten that condition.

Hey, the whole world would pay to watch that event. They could crowdfund Bundy’s bail with it.

Only works that way for poor people. People with money can have their rights reinstated. All it takes is a good lawyer.

That’s the shit that pisses me off. Notice how nobody worries about “making them martyrs” or how “violence will only galvanize their movement” when it’s people of color. They roll in with tanks, teargas, and snipers as implacably as the sun rises. But rich white guys with guns? “Ah, let them have their fun. They’ll get bored after a few days.”

Fuck that. Shoot one of them already. And then have a grand jury go: “nope, no laws broken here. They had it coming.”

Treat these douchebags the way they treat 12-year-old kids of color, or wheelchair-bound men of color, or ordinary drivers of color, or black men with remote controls, or black men without remote controls and no weapons except their scary black selves.

I’d be on board with that plan…if it weren’t so unfair to the skunks.

Yeah “at some point” doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence.
