Good for him. “This changes everything” ranks right up there with “This offer is only good today then will be gone forever” and “Baby, I promise I’ll change and always be faithful to you.”
And above all, don’t enact your own version of the Patriot Act, which is precisely where that kind of sentiment leads and lead us. Learn from our mistakes and resist the urge to step towards fascism as though it’s your blanky.
There have been a couple of rational moments on FOX recently. I’m sure the email from Ailes will be out soon to correct that.
Don’t freak out? Don’t freak out?! DOES HE HAVE ANY IDEA WHERE HE IS WORKING?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
First, we don’t even know that this had anything to do with ISIS-it could be some guy who was kicked out of the army for being on drugs or mentally ill or broke up with his girlfriend. That actually happened in 1984, when a gunman took over the Quebec National Assembly, killing several employees there.
And even if it was someone “inspired by ISIS” what should Canada change? The RCMP and CSIS already monitor people who are in contact with terrorist groups. Should security around Parliament be beefed up? Sure. I remember going there when I was in school a few times. We walked in-no security or anything. We met the PM without being searched or going through metal detectors. OK, I accept those days are over, but Parliament Hill still belongs to the people.
Actually, it’s not “one guy” Shep, it’s cable news networks who are fluffing this story like an 18 year old hotty at a porn shoot. It’s what you people do.
Just a further philosophical point. The search for perfect safety is a fools errand, since we are all going to die in the end no matter what. Live and enjoy life; take a prudent risk now and then.
It can certainly be done, Shep. As far as I know, and if I’m wrong maybe someone will say so, but as far as I know the Brits were cool after the 2005 Underground bombings. Keep calm and carry on, all that. Actually my guess is that as a society the Canadians will do a lot of soul-searching, conclude as usual that at least they’re not awful like us, and go back to normal pretty soon. The police may quietly step up their efforts, but there’ll be no mass freakout. Not the Canadians’ style.
Uhhh… you work for FNC, the Freakout Now Channel
But let’s be honest here: Shep does this so Faux can point at his segment and say “see! we weren’t jsut selling panic and what not!” it’s the same with his sensible Ebola piece. Faux spends 99% of its time selling whatever fear and demagoguery it thinks will help the GOP/Teatrolls and, by extension, the plutocratic movement and then trots out Shep so he can create their smokescreen “fair and balanced” excuse.
So, I think it’s increasingly looking like it was a single gunman (not a much larger group as some American outlets were reporting earlier today). And can I just point out something about this incident that speak to a success of Canadian law - how difficult it is to get your hands on an automatic weapon. If this incident had taken place in the US, the gunman (who had a regular rifle) would have used an automatic weapon and a lot more people would be dead. But it’s hard as hell to get your hands on one of those in Canada. So we have one fatality and an injury. And the only reason the soldier is dead is that he was shot in a surprise attack.
Either that or Shep’s looking for a different venue. It’s becoming more and more common for him to go off the reservation.
I went to Disneyland after 9/11 specifically because people said not to because TERRORISTS!!!
My grandmother always said “the only real defense against terrorism is a just society”.
I’m assuming that since Shep Smith is saying not to freak out, that means the rest of the FOX News lineup is freaking out… or about to?
What do you think they’ll call it “Canadageddon”, “The Shot That Turned Canada to Coffee” Lets hear your Faux News Line
Hey, fluffing is a straight forward and purposful profession. Don’t drag it down to the FOX level.
If only we’d done when W was in power …
don’t give msnbc a pass… i’ve flipped on thruout the day and it appeared to be nonstop coverage of canada… and depending upon the host, a barely contained level of hysteria. maddow is particularly inclined to the dramatic.
oh for the days of calm, measured reporting; and not the endless loop of speculation, constant parade of assorted ‘experts’ and apparent cluelessness that there might be other stories of equal importance out there…
??? Shep Smith has been doing this stuff for years. He has good ratings, and he speaks his mind.
