Discussion for article #241113
I weep for Shell.
This is a big fucking deal but the story isn’t sexy enough. It will be curious to see how many people comment on this story.
If only this decision were made because its the right f**king thing to do instead of a simple dollars & cents argument…
A change of what now? Shell does not have a heart or a soul or anything else you might want to anthropomorphize onto the corporation. It’s got a fucking bottom line and that is it. If they hit a gusher they’d be grinding up polar bears to use as grease for the borehole. The only reason they didn’t just knock those bridge-hangers aside like so many 70’s doorway hanging beads is because there were cameras around.
“Change of heart”, sweet Jeebus.
I have to correct myself - Shell does have a whole bunch of assholes.
If a GOP POTUS is elected in 2016, then the “foreseeable future” has arrived.
Shell cited the “challenging and unpredictable federal regulatory environment in offshore Alaska,” but the story doesn’t mention what those are.
It doesn’t mean anything - that’s just typical corporate boilerplate gobbledygook that gets inserted into any statement in which the speaker really means “hey, don’t blame ME for the fact that we just wasted 10 billion dollars with nothing to show for it”. Rule #1 of corporate ass-covering - when you really, REALLY screw the pooch, blame “government regulations”. Works every time.
