Discussion: Sessions: ‘We Can And Must Do Better’ At Intervening Before Attacks Happen

Is this what you have in mind?

Call us cynical, Jeff while we call BS on you, your boss and the whole damn GOP, and your godlike sponsors in the NRA.

Like, for instance, preventing the mentally ill from buying firearms?

Because on February 28, 2017, Congress passed and Donald Trump signed a law revoking an Obama-era regulatory initiative that made it harder for people with mental illness to buy a gun. It was in all the papers.

Next up ‘thoughts and prayers’ and ‘mental illness’. WTF is this? The cabinet officials are coming out with useless platitudes…again…I am beyond disgusted.

Sessions is silent on Congress’ refusal to let the CDC study exactly this topic: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/10/04/gun-violence-research-has-been-shut-down-for-20-years/?utm_term=.2cd0e1093648

Willful ignorance is what Republicans and the NRA prefer. Pretty sure Sessions voted for this, too, when he was a Senator.

He said the Justice Department is working with the Departments of Health and Human Services and Education to study the “intersection of mental health and criminality” to “better identify how we can stop people before these heinous crimes occur.”

How about:
Do something so they cannot get assault weapons and big ammo magazines - ban them now.
And: Money and facilities for mental health treatment and counseling.
And: Money to study gun violence, its effects, and what to do about it.

For a start.

He then touted his office’s clamp-down on violations of federal firearms laws, saying “we have got to reverse these trends we’re seeing in these shootings.”

“And this situation that we have seen just cannot continue, and we will take such action as we’re able to take,” he said.

And by this was Sessions:
a) suggesting that the laws are fine and sufficient now
b) suggesting that Congress enact more restrictions on guns, especially assault weapons and ammo, and funding for treatment of mental health issues
c) suggesting that Congress further open up gun ownership of every kind to everybody, and thus further restrict the ability to do anything about it

Just got off the phone with John Cornyn’s DC office and was told that the only legislation Cornyn would ever consider is to look at mental health issues with regard to gun access. His rep refused to even discuss the idea of banning the manufacture/sale of assault rifles. These pukes are entirely unconcerned at how their failure to control assault rifles is contributing to mass slaughter.

Sorry Jeff, “Minority Report” was a work of fiction, not a documentary. There is no Pre-Crime Unit that will arrest people before they commit the crime.

I realized at about 9:45 this morning that I have been filled with rage since I woke up this morning and it’s spilling over into everything I do–driving, writing, what have you. And I have to dial that back.

But the way “see something, say something” has become the new “thoughts and prayers” (which used to be the new “too soon, too soon!”) so quickly and so uniformly and so obviously orchestrated and pre-planned for use the next time a mass-slaughter happened isn’t helping.

Neither is this:

The blood-gargling, money-laundering, Putin-sucking objectively evil sociopath fascists at the NRA have given the entire nation PTSD. It’s driven all of us, whether gun-nut or pro-sanity, completely out of our goddamn minds.

IF old Jeffbo spent as much time looking at legal weapons as he spends looking at legal marijuana then maybe he could get something done.

Ah yes…inetervening…after they have all the guns of course…

General Jeff Sessions […] said law enforcement “can and must do better”

To lil Jeffie, this means MORE GUNS and MORE COPS are the answer.

You can’t pray a lie.

So why is it that the first thing the U.S. government does when it wants to quell an insurgency in a foreign country is to impose and arm embargo to that country? Why don’t they simply flood that country with weapons to make everyone safer?

Sessions is talking the NRA line. Nothing will get done because he knows that every NRA junkies favorite shooting gallery is a school. The NRA will protect their second amendment rights at all costs.

Unfortunately Sessions and the entirety of the Trump administration is incapable of doing better, on any front, which means we need to wait to see progress after a Democratic majority is voted in after November.

No we want less government control!

Sadly, it is easier for me to imagine a push in Congress to preemptively jail the mentally ill than it is to imagine meaningful gun control.
