You all realize the original assault weapon ban was so poorly written it was virtually unenforceable. We would have better luck banning semi-automatic rifles designed to operate with detachable magazines. Of course, people like me who use them in organized shooting sports will scream but their concerns can be handled by requiring anyone who really needs one for a sporting or similar purpose to license the rifle and the magazines. There are middle grounds if you want to consider them.
This time lets involve people who actually know about guns.
I would start by not using the term âassault rifle.â That is a term invented by Hitler for marketing purposes. Instead I would focus on the weaponâs physical characteristics. We are talking about a semi-automatic center fire rifle designed to use a detachable magazine larger than 10 rounds. There are a lot of hunting semi-auto rifles with detachable magazines. Up to 10 rounds is a good compromise for sporting purposes. Ten rounds is the magazine size approved for use in pistols in California.
Do you want to stand on your ground or do you want to fashion something that could pass?
You understand that there are literally millions of AR-15s in circulation today. A lot of people have invested a lot of money in them. If you are going to ban them outright you will run straight into depriving people of personal property without due process. In short a giant can of worms.
The FBI thoroughly investigated Boston marathon bomber and nothing came of it. Until we either have a future crimes unit and/or a functioning mental health care infrastructure shit be gonna slip through the cracks.
Câmon, give local cops a break! They only reported him 30 times. Besides if they go arresting all crazy gun nuts in Florida there will be no one to pay their salaries.

Was the term âassault rifleâ key to the 1994 ban? Or did you mean âassault weaponâ?
(As for Mr. Hitler, Iâd rather leave him out of this, if you donât mind.)

Here are some things you may recognize from Feinsteinâs 2013 attempt:
Ban the sale, transfer, manufacturing, etc., of about 150 named weapons, plus certain other weapons fitted for detachable magazines and having âat least one military characteristic.â
To determine what constitutes an assault weapon, abandon the old two-characteristic test and instead use a one-characteristic test that is less easily skirted.
Ban all firearms with âthumbhole stocksâ and âbullet buttons.â
Ban high-capacity ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
Did I miss something important?
Which of these elements did you support in 2013? Which did you oppose?
Guns are one of three main reasons the United States has become âthe most dangerous of wealthy nations for a child to be born into,â according to a study in Health Affairs. The other two are vehicle crashes and infant mortality.
No, you would just create a black market in bullets. Just ban magazines larger than 10 rounds. Personally I could live with a magazine capacity of 5 rounds, but I donât think there is a chance of that being passed.
