Discussion: Seoul: North Korea's Kim Vows To Shut Nuke Test Site In May

The site is already non-functional due to earthquakes. Who knows what environmental damages has occurred. This is a shell game. Moon intends to get a peace arrangement with Kim that does not insist on denuclearization.

Lots of hype.

Given that a mountain collapsed on top of it, yes, likely that it will be closed.

Here’s the REAL reason North Korea is “willing” to shut down the nuke site, and it has nothing to do with Trump:

The mountain above North Korea’s main nuclear test site Punggye-ri has likely collapsed following a nuclear test last fall, sparking concerns about radioactive fallout and environmental catastrophes, according to geologists at the University of Science and Technology of China…

…Following a nuclear bomb test on September 3 of last year, the researchers say the “explosion created a cavity and a damaged ‘chimney’ of rocks” out of nearby Mount Mantap that could be leaching radioactivity. Estimated at 100 kilotons, the blast was the sixth test 10 times stronger than any of the previous five. For comparison, the bomb that was detonated over Hiroshima in 1945 was 15 kilotons. About 8.5 minutes after the explosion, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake was recorded with four subsequent earthquakes generated in the following weeks…"

Trump: “Maybe something good will happen, maybe not. We’ll see. I have no plan or strategy, so who knows? If something good happens, I get full credit and Nobel Peace Prize. If not, it’s someone else’s fault…Kim, Moon, Obama and every president and Secretary of State before me.”

The claims of damage to the site are questionable (as in maybe a lot, maybe only some), but it’s also clear that all of this is based on some kind of non-aggression agreement that the US in its current condition is almost certainly incapable of negotiating. (E.g. removal of all “threatening” troops from the peninsula) So Kin will likely be able to say in a few months that he held out the hand of peace and his enemies spurned it, so he has to redouble blah blah.

(Or, on the other hand, it could be that NK is imploding as it was always fated to and he wants an exit strategy…)

“Once we start talking, the United States will know that I am not a person to launch nuclear weapons at South Korea, the Pacific or the United States,” Kim said, according to Yoon.

“If we maintain frequent meetings and build trust with the United States and receive promises for an end to the war and a non-aggression treaty, then why would we need to live in difficulty by keeping our nuclear weapons?” Yoon quoted Kim as saying.

Yoon said Kim also revealed plans to sync its time zone with South Korea’s. The Koreas had used the same time zone for decades before the North created its own “Pyongyang Time” in 2015 by setting the clock 30 minutes behind South Korea and Japan. Yoon said the North’s decision to return to Seoul’s time zone was aimed at facilitating communication with South Korea and the United States.

Kim: “Comrades, we’ve gotta face facts – we really screwed the pooch on this one. I mean what if the U.S. attacks us at noon, and we’re not ready because it’s only 11:30 here?”

NK generals: “Good catch, sir! Thank God you are here to lead us and guide us, Great Wise Leader!”

Trump: “I just heard on Fox and Friends that the North Koreans just moved their clocks ahead 30 minutes. Well we’ll just move ours ahead an hour, that way we’ve got the drop on them! See how easy this is? Other administrations were too weak and stupid to to this stuff.”

Republicans: “Good catch, sir! Thank God you are here to lead us and guide us, Great Wise Leader!”

Hasn’t this facility been reported to have been disabled by a cave in? Kim is going to negotiate with the USA over something that doesn’t exist? Trump might fall for a ploy like that but nobody else in the world would.

So these sanctions meant nothing to rocket-man?

One 70-yr old blow hard brought him to his knees?

I think the last trip to China was a trip to the wood shed.

He has also promised to give me free Trump Towers in NK.

So, the US State Department will be accepting this private gift as a valid diplomatic concession? What national resources is the US placing on the table in exchange?

Does it matter which American billionaire the gift is sent to, or can it be someone who isn’t the POTUS? What if Duterte offered Elon Musk space for launch facilities? Would that also suddenly count as a legit diplomatic concession?
