Discussion: Senate Rejects 20-Week Abortion Ban Bill In Move Trump Finds 'Disappointing'

Three Democratic-senators up for re-election in conservative states voted to advance the legislation: Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Republicans Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted with most Democrats to reject it.

Nine votes shy of 60.

Proof positive that Trump did not write the statement himself.

“The vote was 51-46, short of the 60-vote threshold to advance the bill. Three Democratic-senators up for re-election in conservative states voted to advance the legislation: Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.”

The Hall of Shame. Never forget.

This, at least, seems like good news:

“…I urge the Senate to reconsider its decision and pass legislation that will celebrate, cherish, and protect life.”

Finally, the administration is fully backing Medicaid, community health centers, environmental regulations, fighting climate change, and other efforts to cherish and, especially, protect life. A bit late coming around, but very welcome!

A twenty-week abortion ban would be pointless. We’re already well past the 52nd week of Chiselin’ Trump’s presidency.

I’d hate to estimate how many abortions he has left women to deal with.

Yes, but if you want Manchin to hold his seat in November …

Their votes didn’t help pass the bill, but will help them win election in 2018. They won’t vote for McConnell as Majority Leader. This wasn’t the time to take a stand on principle (and I think at least two of the three are genuinely anti-abortion).

“We must defend those who cannot defend themselves. I urge the Senate to reconsider its decision and pass legislation that will celebrate, cherish, and protect life.”

Will losing health insurance mean more US deaths? Experts say yes

“We must defend those who cannot defend themselves. I urge the Senate to reconsider its decision and pass legislation that will celebrate, cherish, and protect life.”

…unless they’re infants and children who are already born who are sick and have no health insurance, or unless they’re Dreamers, or unless they’re on death row. Then we need not “celebrate, cherish, and protect life”. I could go on with the hypocrisy of pretending to “protect life”, when it’s only about protecting the unborn.

since when is Pennsylvania a conservative state?

Pennsylvania DID vote for Trump in 2016. I’m not sure how much political currency Trump currently holds there right now, though. :-/

In a statement, Trump called the Senate action “disappointing” and added: “We must defend those who cannot defend themselves. I urge the Senate to reconsider its decision and pass legislation that will celebrate, cherish, and protect Caucasian life.”

Another great way to maintain future GOP dominance.

At which point, Donnie asked for an update on how many DACA kids are scheduled to be deported…

Don’t forget to add “…Caucasian life born to wealthy, privileged parents.”

Casey’s a fucking pro-lifer, it has nothing to do with his reelection this year.

I’ve said it here before but I still hold Casey personally responsible for being the deciding vote that didn’t allow the senate to override W’s veto of the stem cell research bill. They needed 67 votes for the override but Casey wouldn’t do it.

He’s good on almost every issue but I fucking hate that I’m stuck with anti-choice Casey and corporate buttboy Toomey as my senators.
