Discussion: Senate Judiciary Cmte. Cancels Votes On Judges As Flake Refuses To Back Down

Let’s see if Flake can manage not to flake.

Still hasn’t backed down. Wonder how long this will last.

McConnell can bypass the committee and bring any of those judges to the floor for a vote any time he likes. If he’s letting Flake have his way, it probably means he doesn’t think they’ll get 51 votes.

“Flake’s Last Stand.”

Be prepared for disappointment…

But Grima Wormtongue said hours later that the bill is a “solution in search of a problem” because Trump is not going to act against Mueller.

FIFY.

Apparently Mitch and his cronies are as up their ears in Russians as the Trumphole. He is abetting obstruction and ought to go down with Dear Leader. Mueller time can’t come soon enough.

Flake needs a little something to promote any possible future political gigs. Distancing himself from this GOP - trump cabal makes sense if he figures the current Party is going down in flames.

I wonder what it feels like for Flake to do something for the good of the country as opposed to the will of the GOP?

I’m sure it’s a new experience for him. Probably a bit dizzying.

Who knew being a true Representative of the people would feel so good?

So if Trump is not going to move against Mueller then it would seem to me that protecting Mueller shouldn’t be a problem . It would take what 15 mins to vote?

As disappointing as Flake has been, he could still surprise us IMHO. The risk-reward calculus of opposing Trump has changed since the beginning. And there are few public-minded Americans unaware of the Capraesque mythology of standing up and fighting the go-along-get-along crowd in order to do what’s right. It’s a gamble, and it could leave him ostracized and irrelevant or it could leave him in a sweet position. We can all see Sasse’s game isn’t getting him much. I’m not counting Flake out yet.

Hmm. Lot of people come to Jesus on their death beds. While I’ve never had much appreciation for people who begin to see the light only when it directly shines on them, I am encouraged that Flake realizes the best legacy for himself is to distance himself from today’s GOP.

Surely Mitch doesn’t think we’re all stupid enough to fall for the “I’m gonna leave all these conservative judges in limbo because I don’t think the Mueller protection is necessary” line? Like the Senate floor is such a sacred place that only the most righteous of bills and Benghazi investigations can occur there.

Wait… ok, no, I hear it… yes, he does think we’re that stupid.

And unfortunately Trump’s election may prove him right. (Thinking about it the election of McConnel himself may add credence to the issue of collective voter stupidity.)

'Fraid so.

It’s too bad he didn’t do this in response to any number of egregious acts like, say, the tax scam billionaire bonus or elevating a whiny tantruming pea-brained man baby to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court or kidnapping and jailing children while torturing entire families or…

But he voted for all of that, he voted to confirm Sessions, he did nothing about the hack and nepotism hires. He’s done nothing about Puerto Rico, nothing about mass incarceration, the opioid crisis, the havoc trump has brought to our foreign affairs and the State Department… He is responsible, along with his GOP peers for every harm, every injury, every death that occurs as a result of this administration.

The list of what he’s allowed is so freakin long, he could spend every day he has left in office doing everything he could and it still wouldn’t reverse even 5% of what he did,

f*ck him till the end of time.

We’ll probably hear calls from him in 2020/2024 along the lines of “Look at me, centrists and Democrats! I’m not like other Republicans!”

And then we’ll remind this spineless idiot that he voted for Kavanaugh.

My fav in re death-bed conversions:

Just before the death of actor W. C. Fields, a friend visited Fields’ hospital room and was surprised to find him thumbing through a Bible. When he asked what he was doing with a Bible, Fields replied, “I’m looking for loopholes.” :smirk:
