Discussion: Senate Intelligence Committee Subpoenas Michael Cohen

What’s up with that? The Republicans did this. Why and why now?

What are the implications of not appearing publicly before the Democratic-run House committee and now appearing behind closed doors before the Republican-run Senate committee?

Who are they intimidating ? Cohen or Donald ?

I think Cohen and Davis and Mueller and House Dems are trying to set-up witness tampering and intimidation in plain sight. Over the last few days I could never see how delaying his testimony was going to get Cohen out of hot water or increase his safety. So I think his delay is a bit of a smokescreen…I just don’t know exactly what the real game is. Now the Senate subpoenas him…and it probably isn’t what Mueller wants. Are the R senators trying to put a stick in Mueller’s spokes?

To:

  1. Question him in private
  2. Announce to the public that he cannot be trusted to tell the truth
  3. Any public House testimony therefore is suspect.

Schiff did…and given Turtle’s grip over his caucus, anything with the words ā€œGOPers in the Senateā€ take on Quisling-like aspects

It’s just their way of wishing us a very merry Infrastructure Week.

Will this subpoena qualify him and his family for witness protection from the manchurian mobster? Or even if so will Trump’s shutdown prevent it from being implemented? Are those in federal witness protection even really protected from a President who iirc has authority to declassify anything he wants to?

You can bet it isn’t to get to the truth.
Frankly, I just don’t trust Cohen that much either.

The Senate better provide witness protection to Cohen and his family or Trump-Giuliani’s Russian assassins (secret cells) operating in the US will take him out. Mueller is proving to be another trump enabler…he needs to be replaced by Eric Holder who will fully prosecute Trump!

Seems SIC is as concerned about Trump as HOC, as they should be!

Question:

However can an ā€œintelligenceā€ committee be run by Republicans?

I misread. I was thinking it was the House Intel, but it is the Senate Intel Committee that issued the subpoena. My bad.

But good that they’ve issue the subpoena. It’s a good sign for the Senate going forward, even if Burr is doing it because the House investigations are going to highlight the lack of action in the Senate.

Spot on.

Trump wanted a distraction from the shutdown and the smackdown over the SOTU?

Methinks Schiff and Cummings will be taking careful note of this, and will not let it go unaddressed in some fashion. At least I hope.

interesting interview on NPR with an Atlantic Journal writer calling for impeachment to start sorting out the facts. against that backdrop, this thing with Cohen is just a weird dance between both parties and both houses of congress. there are lots people in DC who know Trump is unfit to serve. they want him gone. but they want somebody else, as in Mueller, to be the heavy so they don’t have to get their hands dirty. in this part of the dance, Cohen can say he didn’t want to appear before Congress, ā€œbut they forced me to.ā€

I have to quote the Palmer Report on this:

ā€œBy making his statement today, Cohen got the opportunity to formally accuse Trump and Giuliani of felony witness tampering. It means he gets to educate the public about how and why this is a crime, before Robert Mueller hits them with the corresponding felony charges. It also means that if Trump goes through with his threats to accuse Cohen’s father-in-law of certain unspecified crimes, the public will know to put this within the context of Trump’s attempts to intimidate Cohen out of testifying.ā€

Seems like one more step in actually naming Trump’s various sins and ā€˜normalizing’ discussion about them, viz. the previously-forbidden ā€˜impeachment’ word.
