Discussion: Senate Intel Dem: Comey Firing Indicates Trump Admin Is 'Afraid' Of Russia Probe

Actually there is a reasonable chance that he fired Comey because Comey said his actions in October left him mildly nauseous. That comment alone would demonstrate to Trump that Comey thought he played a decisive roll in Trump’s victory and that would give the ego driven Trump plenty to be angry about.

Yes, but unlikely directly by him. Gotta be an intermediary…a trusted bilingual intermediary.

Oh yeah. If the investigations turn up a solid connection from Trump to the Russians, and Democrats get any amount of power in Washington (either by election or just a handful of truly honest Republicans giving them the chance), then the very next day, those investigations turn to Nunes and Chaffetz and Rosenstein and Sessions and Tillerson and literally anyone who has had any contact with anything Trump related.

IF the country is made aware of a broader conspiracy AND the trail doesn’t get disrupted by GOP loyalists, we could end up with a decade long truth and reconciliation situation in the vein of (though not the scale or hopefully grave nature of) something like post-Civil War reconstruction or the Nuremberg Trials. But honestly, the answer (for all my willingness to speculate) is that nobody really knows, and no one knows if it’s going to go that way.

(Those examples are too extreme. There are countries that piece together a political system following all sorts of heinous political activity of “one side”. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But the reason I mentioned those cases are that with stuff like this, we’d ultimately be making it up as we go along.)

I dunno, that seems like an odd demand. A probe like this by a special prosecutor or independent commission will take months to complete. Allowing Trump to put in whoever he wants is bad, but leaving the FBI decapitated during that time isn’t much better. We need at least few Republicans in the Senate to find their damn spines and ensure the FBI director is someone independent.

And no Lindsey Graham, a partisan politician with no law enforcement background isn’t a good choice for FBI director at any time, not just now.

Those people don’t exist in DC. They all left or lost reelection.

Trump should fire Jeff Sessions and Rod Rosenstein for making a mess of the Comey firing. They are single handedly responsible for Preshitident Trump, Penice and the Russian intelligence cell in the White House snatching a stinging defeat from a yuge conservative victory.

He said enough to send Trump the message that it’s just a matter of time before the evidence leads to his associates criminal activities.

Really? Do you think that is how Republicans play politics? When was the last time a Republican gave a Democrat the “benefit of the doubt?” Emails? Birth Certificate? Benghazi? Foster? Whitewater? And on and on and on…

We are not talking about a court of law, we are talking about the court of public opinion.

The Democrats come out on the field with little flags on their belts while the Republicans come out in full pads and helmets. It is why we lose.

And THAT is something we cannot and should not count on – this is not business as usual anymore. Plus, this is the moment to play the hardest game possible and control the narrative. Why easily let McConnell proceed?

And as we speak – looks like Schumer comes out to support Nelson’s position.

Right next to the ones the Russians planted last week. :frowning:

I’m afraid so, as well. But maybe we can make do with a couple of vicious ne’er-do-wells who will either enjoy watching Trump loyalists squirm and/or use the opportunity to lionize themselves in history books.

I’d lean towards Roger Slimeball Stone for that functionary.

Your exhumation of the FDR plan to “pack the Court” would only serve, imho, to weaken every other measure to counteract the repugnicans’ attempted murder of our democracy.

BUT, your process whereby a D-Speaker of the House becomes ‘Temp-Prez USA’ Nancy Pelosi just made my day!!

Because i’m imagining thousands, if not millions, of repugnicans’ heads exploding!!! :fireworks:

FDR didn’t just propose to expand the Court. His was a convoluted plan to actually “pack.” Increasing the size of the Court from 9 to 11 justices has historical precedent. The court, throughout its history, has had a varying number of justices. Adding two justices would make sense - 1 justice for every appeals circuit. If done correctly, no “packing” charge could be leveled (well, the Repubs would scream, but the historical precedent might tamp down the noise).

Having said that there is a reasonable chance that Trump fired Comey because he thought Comey was taking too much credit for Trump’s victory, I think it is critical that Democrats push the Russia connection for all its worth for as long as possible. If possible Democrats should let months and months go by without anything but rank speculation. I think there is every reason to believe that Flynn, Manafort and a couple of others are Russian agents. I don’t think Putin is dumb enough to have recruited Trump. He is a useful idiot, but lacks the stability to be an agent. Kushner might be the agent within the family. Don’t overlook Melania, she could be far more than eye candy. When it is all said and done, the Comey firing was a totally unforced error that might end up saving our Republic.

The short version of that massive post basically boils down to this: Republicans are going to scream bloody murder no matter what Democrats do and (should they get substantial majorities in Congress following a collapse of Trump’s legitimacy) they shouldn’t be shy about doing what’s necessary to undo those illegitimate political gains. The lesson of the Obama years may have been to stop caring about hand-wringers and just fix what needs to be fixed.

The politicization of the Garland/Gorsuch seat was as aggressive a power grab as packing the court would be, and it’s not like the GOP suffered for it.

Yeah. Too bad they can’t take it with them.
