Discussion: Second Texas Clerk Retires Rather Than Issue Marriage Licenses To Same-Sex Couples

I’m giving Rush Fox Radio a week before praising her for doing the right thing quietly

“Live Oak County Clerk Karen Irving said in an email, according to the
Observer, that she was unable to uphold her oath of office because of
the historic ruling in favor of gay marriage. Her final day was
Wednesday, the magazine reported.”

The odd thing to me is marriage licenses from a county clerk are a civic transaction and have nothing to do with anyone’s religion. The clerk is not restricted in practicing her faith. Her public duties could be separate from her private beliefs. Perhaps I am missing something here.

Good idea.

Someone in comments at the Texas Observer said that this woman’s husband used to be the commenter’s pastor. They’re Southern baptists. I’m not surprised she refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples; she was in deep.

Good and good riddance!

Well I want to give her kudos for standing by her deeply held beliefs. Now that I can get married to my partner, she can head off and lift her martyred head high, knowing that we both got what we want … I get equality … she gets to spend the rest of her days searching for work at Hobby Lobby or some other forward thinking place.

You’re not missing anything … however, the clerk … maybe a brain?

Same sex marriage is shrinking the size of government!!!

While Texas governor is/was fighting Jade Helm, multi tasker Obama crept in with Constitution and is usurping TX. He had already taken away their Confederate Flag. Texans couldnt respond as Obama has taken all their guns.

Now she will go to Obamacare to get subsidized health cared.

I said what I did because on occasion I miss snark, even fairly obvious snark. And I also frequently miss sarcasm. It’s a failing but at least I recognize it.

This clerk did the right thing by resigning I think. But still she was issuing a civil marriage license and her faith was not, or should not, have been involved. I would have thought her conscience would be clear on the matter. I resigned from a job on a point of personal honor myself years ago (my boss was having an affair with a coworker of mine and showing favoritism as to salary and he wanted me to go along with it so I refused and quit the job). So I kind of understand tangentially (since it wasn’t a matter of faith for me) what the clerks motivation was like.

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out Karen.

Good. Making room for a non-bigot to get a livable paycheck doing this job.

“…unless there’s a glitch with the vendor…”

What is she referring to?

What “vendor” and how would same-gender marriage license issuance cause any “glitch” in the already being used system for same-gender marriage?

There is either something missing in this article, or this is pure bafflegab from the soon departing bigot.

Being “in deep” is protected by our Constitution. Apparently she recognized the separation between her faith and her responsibilities as a public employee, and felt she could not reconcile the two. I respect her decision and how she went about it.

If you are incapable of doing your job, you should step down. Pity George W. Bush didn’t feel that way.

The right of gays to marry is now also protected by the Constitution. I have no admiration for viewpoints which deny these basic rights to other human beings.

It’s not the “Christian” thing to do.

The right-wing Jesus Brigade sees every single action as part of their religion.
It’s stupid, I know, but it’s how they are.

Issuing a marriage license doesn’t make you a participant in a wedding anymore than standing in your garage makes you a car.

Isn’t there already a collection of idiots in most Walmarts? Are you saying the Military is lazy?

Obama didn’t kill the job. The job’s still there. They just need to find someone competent to fill it.
