Discussion: SCOTUS Rejects GOP Leaders' Ask To Put PA Congressional Map On Hold

Right on all counts!

That’s unfair. Alito could have considered it without referring it to the full bench.

This is why the state legislature races, this year and especially in 2020, are so dang important. There’s little hope that state courts in N.Carolina, Texas, Florida, Virginia, Wisconsin, etc are going to follow the Pennsylvania court’s lead, and the federal courts have consistently failed to fix it. We need to wrest control over redistricting away from the Corrupublicans in as many states as possible. The constitution gives this authority to states, so Congress (imagine Dem majority) can’t help.

The new PA Federal House District map reportedly still gives a slight edge to Republicans. It might be more accurate to describe it as “less unfair,” or “less unconstitutional,” than as “more favorable.”

Gee, the gop just doesn’t understand the word, NO
Goes along with:
It’s impossible to lose an election

We’re going to win the House despite a dumbed-down press.

In Pennsylvania our judges are elected–which is generally not the greatest idea–but that PA Supreme Court Democratic majority comes from the Nov. 2017 election and represents the Resistance or a leading indicator of the coming Blue Wave. Also, of note, something like 7 out of 8 new judges elected to statewide positions were women.

He DID knock it down himself the first time they went to him.

“…dealt a potentially fatal blow…”

Somebody help a time-challenged person understand why it’s “potentially” a fatal blow, please?

BOOM!

There it is!

Inquirer article

Costello is insane. He laments he is losing the southern (supposedly liberal) part of his gerrymandered district, but refuses to see he could easily run and win in the northern (Repub) part of his district. Yet he threatens to resign, but will not commit, driving the state GOP nuts.

Wait a minute…
this is a good thing.

I hate him.
He is one of those guys that pretends to ask what ‘you’ think, and then goes and does whatever he’s told by his Party, the hell with the people who elected him.
Good riddance.

True but that was an earlier petition, and the case was not as far along. The fact that Alito did not refer the request to the full court, as he did with this petition, strongly suggests that he did not view the earlier petition as an even remotely close call.

This is exactly what I have been telling my bike club members who live in Costello’s district, but some are still swayed by his non-committal answers… until he votes straight party.

But, hey, let’s celebrate one of the “HUGEST” victories in recent state politics, with ramifications nationwide. Its a deafening double-barreled blast to those on the right trying to cheat the system.

From my understanding, the GOP never had a chance. This was a matter settled by the Pennsylvania Constitution, and the SC had no jurisdiction to change it. Thanks for wasting the Court’s time and your money, idiots. Got any more frivolous cases to clog up the system?

Costello is a class A scumbag and a crybaby, and will lose bigly in November now.

There is actually some question about whether he’s going to run at all.
Which is fine with me.
If he runs in the new 6th, (Chester County) he’ll likely lose. If he runs in the 11th (Lancaster County) it’s much redder, but not where he lives … or even pretends to, since I think all these assholes move more or less permanently to DC.

What a great day for the Democrats and democracy. This is a much fairer map and the Dems will pick up 3-5 seats (and I’m tempted to take the over on that).

I also think this decision may weigh on the SCOTUS with respect to the other cases in TX, NC and WI. The PA Supreme Court decision trolled the SCOTUS hard. It basically said that PA had no trouble, unlike the Feds, of finding that voter’s rights are paramount. Once the SCOTUS has now effectively ruled that state courts have primary importance on districting, it’s possible that the SCOTUS chooses to uphold the lower court decisions, as this isn’t an area where SCOTUS can set the standard. In addition, the state courts and lower district courts are sort of embarrassing the SCOTUS on the issue of voting rights. Supreme Court Justice like to make wide ranging pronouncements that affect everything downstream. By supporting the PA Supreme Court, the SCOTUS is saying that this is not an area where federal courts will exclusively set the standard and they can see where most of the other courts are coming down on this issue. This could be persuasive on Roberts and Kennedy. I hope so. It’s time those justices start making up for a lot of bad decisions.
