Discussion for article #226121
Schweitzer long ago made his decision he has bigger ambitions. Otherwise why spend all that quality time beating up on Hilary Clinton?
(not that for a second do I believe he could beat her, or most other candidates for that matter, out of the primary level - he’s nowhere near ready for primetime)
Agreed on all points. It would be better for the country (and certainly the party) if he did switch gears and run for the Senate (where he would likely win). But his ego and ambition is in opposition to what he can realistically accomplish (winning the open Senate seat from his state).
Schweitzer has really shown himself to a be a prat. He might win this Senate seat, which would be very important, even with a very right-wing Dem like him. He certainly has a far better chance than any other Dem in the state.
But no, he won’t help the country by doing that… he has to stick to his hopelessly futile “drive the party to the right” campaign against Hillary, which will go precisely nowhere and achieve nothing.
Thanks for nothing. He’ll never be president.
OTOH, maybe he’s smarter than we think. Lots of others have gotten the eff out of DC. Why jump in?
Hey, thanks for nothing, Butte-head! Hope your still smiling when your state’s Republican Senator votes, “AYE!” at President Obama’s impeachment.
Why would anyone want to be a United States senator today? You get next to nothing done, certainly little that is novel and important. You spend time you would rather be with your family asking all sort of people you ordinarily would not be in the same room with for lots of money, and then have to do something for it. I cannot see how you can say that the job anything but sucks these days.
Word. Obama was the first Sen since Kennedy to be Potus. Five years later Congress is absolutely radioactive. I don’t see any candidates coming out of the Senate, and that includes Rand Paul and the water slurpy guy from FL (forgetting his name now, just as well).
Bummed. I thought for sure he’d run—not sure he’s viable as presidential candidate… maybe as VP but being a Senator is better than being a VP.
He made it clear previously that he wasn’t interested in running for the Senate because of the current state of dysfunction, and I can’t blame him. That said, the Senate is a team sport, and former governors prefer to be “The Man.” And despite all his dissembling, Schweitzer’s been pretty obvious about his desire to be POTUS, but his most recent statements have definitely shown that – while he’s one of the Dems’ best speakers in a prepared setting – he’s still not ready for primetime.
Doesn’t make any sense, running for President as a senator is way cooler that running while unemployed. I’m sure he’s self employed but running from a position of strength makes more sense.
He’s made his choice … maybe someone else can break out of the pack.
I would not be surprised if Hillary picks him for Vice President.
No chance. if it’s Hillary, it’s Joaquin Castro. If it’s anyone else… Well, it still may be Joaquin Castro, although Kirsten Gillibrand would be a hell of a good pick, too!
The thing is though, that winning the Senate seat would do more for his ambitions than not running does.
Not running burned bridges at the national level that he would sorely need in a close primary battle. He has turned his back on the national party at a very crucial time…that won’t be forgotten.
Not to mention that being a Senator does give him a national platform and a certain amount of gravitas from which to launch a presidential campaign.
Personally, I am of the opinion that he isn’t particularly serious about a presidential run, either. It will be a good money grabbing gig for him, but I think he is envisioning his own show.
Well good work, Brian.
The people of Montana appreciate your me-first/fuck-you attitude.
Not true. It worked for Reagan.
It worked for Romney too. Well at least Romney thought it did until about 10 pm on election night. Anyway, Reagan cheated.
The national Democrats also appreciate the kick in the balls.
He seems to be picking up the flag of Lieberman and running with it.
At least he’ll be funnier, and won’t sound like Droopy Dawg. (“Y’know what? John McCain is right!”)
