now if we can just make sure they are implemented, and not slow walked for months.
If Schumer can force a vote on sanctions why not one on the shutdown?
Well, maybe there is a chance McConnell will allow this vote.
In need of a quick primer here:
Who introduced/passed the original sanctions?
How does the Treasury have the authority to suspend them?
This is something even Republicans should get behind -as they have in the past -lest they shine an even brighter spotlight on Putin’s man in the White House.
…which then reflects back directly on them and their own complicity.
And in case there is any doubt in how Putin views Trump -which is as a pawn in a geopolitical battle against America and the West -he doesn’t care how hot the seat gets for Trump, he just wants the sanctions gone. So who does Trump fear more, Putin or Mueller? They both have the goods on him.
Mnuchins gold-digger wife probably wants to be in Moscow for the first minting of the new 2019 rubles, bearing Donnie’s picture.
Because this is a privileged resolution. The law allows it to be brought up, and passed with a Majority vote. The budget does not work this way.
It was clear that this would come up, as it forces Corey Gardner, mcsalley, Jodi earnst, Thomas tillis, Susan Collins, and David Purdue and even John Coryn, to take a vote (a) for Russia/trump or (b) America. And that vote if for (a) will run endlessly in 30 second ads in 2020.
If Mnuchin had any self-respect, he would have resigned before acquiescing to Trump’s demand for sanctions removal on a Russian oligarch. Just another ethically and morally defective individual, though we sort of knew that when we heard he came from Goldman-Sachs. I hope he has his picture taken with numerous license plates that he’s personally engraved.
But I thought the budget is subject to reconciliation; i.e., can pass with a majority vote. We need major reform of Congress or there will be endless shutdowns. We need an end to leadership, of whatever party, refusing to allow votes. Their job is to lead-i.e., get the work done-not shirk.
I see where you went wrong.
Budget bills may not be brought to the floor as privileged resolutions,.
The actual budget is subject to reconciliation, but what’s at issue here is a bunch of continuing resolutions, which are designed to make up for cases where a budget bill hasn’t been passed. Ryan couldn’t be bothered to pass actual budget bills, and used up his reconciliation instructions on getting tax cuts and trying to kill the ACA. So he left a complete mess for the democrats to clean up (sound familiar?)
Question:
Can Schumer “force a vote” on the shutdown? And if not, why not?
And if so, why the fuck hasn’t he?
The whole point of quid pro quo is that both parties involved hold up their end of the bargain.
The Russians held up their end, it’s simply unfair to block Trump from upholding his.
I am pretty sure that should McSally run for a full term or in the 2020 special election we here in AZ will hold to fill the last two years of McCain’s term, she will lose. She is not as well liked as she thinks she is.
And thank you for the explanation.
I love that. I’ve been faxing Cornyn and I guess I’ll have to send another one about this.
Today’s GOP is the party of treason.
