Trump : Give me a bi-partisan bill and I’ll sign it
Congress : OK, here you go. Please sign it.
Trump : No
Congress : WTF?

Well, of course not, Mr. Schumer. This isn’t about leadership and consensus. It’s simply about domination.

Well, I’m one of those “essential” Federal employees who are required to continue working and not get paid. Still remember the first time this happened in 1978 when Chalmers Wylie demanded an end to Medicaid abortions and Ed Brooke said NO on the Senate side. That one lasted 3 weeks. There were a couple minor ones under Reagan and Old Man Bush. Then came the 5 week shutdown between Thanksgiving 1995 past New Year’s 1996 where we had no Thanksgiving or Christmas because The GINGRINCH didn’t get a decent seat on Air Force One. And then came Mr. Canadian Cruz’s 17 day hissy fit in 2013. Now I fear this one will go on longer than the GINGRINCH fiasco. Well, I’ll have to blow the dust off of the Master Card to pay the bills for gawd knows how long…

Every single person who thought HRC’s email and long history in public and private service as well as Bill’s misbehavior were reason enough to vote for the PuPPet contributed to this moment of having almost no functioning government.

Over on the House side, Republicans echoed the White House’s public stance: that they would not negotiate on the issues Democrats are asking for until the government was reopened.

“We’re not going to any negotiating until the government is reopened,” Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) told reporters. “That is locked in.”

Instead, House members spent more than an hour sparring over whether a Republican lawmaker broke House rules by bringing to the floor a sign with Schumer’s photo on it.

Using their time productively I see.

Nice article from Richard Wolffe at the Guardian

Today’s Republican party is built on principle. As a matter of principle, the GOP believes it is the only party that can shut down government as a negotiating tactic. The Democrats’ job is to keep that government open and to cave in to its demands.

These truths we hold to be self-evident, after watching several rounds of this sad kabuki theater through the Clinton and Obama years.

Now that the Democrats have triggered a government shutdown, Republicans are outraged. Because of their principles, you know.

With government shutdown, Republicans reap what they sow

It’s simply about domination.

Exactly right. The need to always be the dominate one is unsustainable. It eventually leads to neurosis. Goes all the way back to daddy and his need to dominate. Unfortunately, we can’t detach ourselves from Trump’s tortured exhausting unfulfilled life. Not today anyway.

“We’re not going to any negotiating until the government is reopened,” Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) told reporters. “That is locked in.”

The GOP did not engage in any negotiating while the government was open. The GOP refuses to engage in any negotiating while the government is shut down. But they will begin negotiations as soon as the government is reopened and those negotiations will produce a great plan. A giant, beautiful, massive plan. Believe me.

As a retired Fed, and one who hopes they mail the pension check, I thank you for your service.

OT, but where is news about all the Marches? This happened last year too. I even sent TPM a private message then, about how there was so little coverage of the Marches. Same this year! All of the networks are covering it, but nothing here.

For that matter, (and I have never complained about TPM) the news here lately has seemed very sluggish and late to the party. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me? Plus, I am REALLY tired of ALL the new ads, blinking nonstop on the site while I am trying to read, despite my paying my 50 bucks membership fee.

Are there any adults in DC?
If trump were actually the ‘deal making king’ then this fracas would not have happened. We have squabbling children tossing hissy fits in both Chambers of Congress and the supposed Genius of Geniuses who is supposed to be the best deal maker in history can’t seem to find the light switch in a dark bathroom.

Shutting down the government is not how it works.

We may not be able to cut the pay of Congress and trump but I think it might be possible to turn off the heat at the Capitol and the White House…
