My two cents- Trump is at heart a simpleton with a crooked bent who inherited wealth. The ‘Wall’ fiasco forced him to worry about the Mueller investigation and the Shutdown simultaneously.
Today’s pre-dawn arrest of Roger Stone reminded him in sharp relief that he dare not cease his machinations against Mueller’s Team for even a moment.
So today he made a choice to abandon his infantile pique out of fear of what Mueller will do next.
Trump and the republicans got pretty scalded on this kidnapping attempt.
I think they’ll think twice before trying this tactic again anytime soon. But I could be wrong.
I think the people who learned a lesson were those who wanted to compromise with Trump. You can’t with a bully, which is something Nancy knows. I think Schumer does as well, he just did not have the pull pre-mid-terms to stand firm.
The pattern of how to address Trump for the next two years has now been set.
Trump is beyond repair. What I hope is those bomb throwing, backbenchers in the Republican Party, like Cruz and Lee, learn their lesson. That trying to use government shutdowns as leverage on policy issues has got to stop. The American people have seen how disruptive it is, and know that it’s the last refuge for a poor argument.
Hmmmmm…how much of this “cave in” is really only about falling polling numbers and that Trump really really REALLY wants to give the SOTU speech in the House Chambers?
If it’s the SOTU, I really think he’s actually blown a PR opportunity by not giving the speech as a campaign speech where he’d have no negative reactions at all. But then again, maybe he wants the Democrats’ ire to feed on and to feed his base…
and @pshah - I totally agree that Trump is beyond repair. Cruz really got his ass handed to him. The local news showed parts of Bennett’s speech last night. hahahahahahahahaha I don’t know if that will be enough to put a dent in his admantine arrogance, but perhaps.
A reaction like “Seriously, Chuck?” as though his comments are some kind of naive misstep means you seriously missed the point of them, and it’s you with the naive view of politics.
One might wish that he had phrased it as hoping Trump and the Senate Republicans who were complicit had learned their lesson. But I’ll take it. It keeps the message on point, about how a shutdown shouldn’t ever be rewarded when you can’t get your way through normal means.
In normal times, after a drubbing, the president makes an effort to try to look chastened (see Clinton in 1994, Reagan in 1982/86, Obama in 2010, Bush II in 2006). Trump pretended that nothing had happened. However his bluffing ran up against the hard power that the democrats have. Had Trump acted more reasonable, people in the democratic party would have been more cautious. But with this cave and the cave over the SOTU, the Democrats are not likely to give ground.
At this point they will be emboldened to go after Trump, who has been shown to be a bully who ends up hurting not the opposition, but himself.
He’s too stupid to do anything else. The bad thing is that before he gets to self destructing utterly (and he’s on his way) he’s doing incalculable damage to this country. He is nothing but destructive.
Speaking of which
WTF?
This time bomb will go off splitting the Republicans down the middle the minute someone challenges Trump (as you know they will) GOP committee passes resolution to cancel Republican primary due to Trump’s ‘effective presidency’
YES and I have said this and said it - but I just can’t believe this. She is the leader of my dreams. She’s got it - she sees what we all see and she knows how to deal with it and she’s doing it and it works and the relief I feel knowing she’s there between him and us is one of the best feelings ever.
I may be wrong about this, but I think this is stupidest thing a political party has ever tried to do. Putting all the democracy killing, dictatorship advancing aspects of it to one side, how dumb are they?
I kind of hope they do it. Let them cut their own throat.
I don’t know you but I love your responses. Even if I don’t always agree.
Chuck needs to man up against the totally sissies in the GOP.
Any one who stands with Trump is a coward.
