A handful of GOPers who can resist the opportunity to set the direction of SCOTUS foe the next 30 years in favor of the institution?
And this is the guy weâre expecting to lead the fight?
Has he learned nothing?
Heâs counting on a handful of Republicans that realize that choices they make now will screw them over later. They play more of a long game. I know, itâs not a lot of them, but the turtle is one. Thatâs the reason, up to this point, they havenât done away with the filibuster. In the end, theyâll get screwed over by it for a short term gain. Now, whether that handful can hold off the nutters remains to be seen.
Why do we even need a court in the first place? We can just have Rep. King just propose a bunch of laws.
Assuming you are talking about McConnell, I kind of have to disagree with you there. Filling SCOTUS seats and rest of the judicary down stream, are the main, perhaps only, reason that McConnell got on board the Trump train, however reluctantly. He is looking at being Senate Majority leader for 4 years, after which retirement will be a definite optionâŚand he wants to leave a lasting mark that he can only achieve with a republican in the White House with a pulse and ability to sign a name. He has that now, and he knows that Trump is so shallow on matters of policy, that his judge picks wonât be made by himâŚie, they will be people that McConnell wants to stay on the bench for 20-30 years.
That is THE defining notion in McConnellâs brain, and has been for some time. He isnât going to be that concerned about lasting damage to the Senate institution by elimination of a filibuster, because he probably wonât be there after 2020, so it wonât be his problem.
I disagree. Heâs the only Republican leader that Obama has publicly given what appears to be sincere respect after his re-election. I donât get it either, but Iâm going to trust that a little bit. That said, Iâm not saying it wonât get overturned. Iâm saying thatâs what Schumer is trying to play. Itâs a smart move for now and frankly, the only one weâve really got.
Just eliminate the rigged for the rich US judicial systemâŚplus isnât this what they wantâŚto shrink and deregulate government.
Donât allow Trump to place anyone on the SCOTUS after what McConnell and Ryan did to ObamaâŚesspecially since Obama was legitimately elected and Trump was NOT.
The bastard President doesnât deserve to name anyone to the SCOTUS - ever!
Itâs gonna be very hard for them to change the rules because there are a handful of Republicans who believe in the institution of the Senate."
who?
That is an interesting question, I wonder if now is the time for the media to start talking to, promoting those Senators that never seem to appear on the news shows? Letâs dig into people who are not on the Leadership team. See who else sits on those important committees.
And lest we forget 2020 is just around the corner we need a Rubio counter for days at work or days not at work.
Scalia is still dead.
Happy new year
The Chuckster said some comforting things last night on the tele. Looking forward to the bumbling and mumbling of the Republicans. The political snowball starts rolling downhill very soon.
Thatâs the reason why I asked is that these are the same folks (Kirk aside) who had no problem going along with that âblockâ.
Maddow then asked if Schumer would do his âbest to hold the seat open.â
âAbsolutely,â Schumer replied.
I think if you consulted with leading Republicans they'd tell you this is an outlandishly insulting and ill advised way to approach filling a SCOTUS vacancy.
⌠and without a hint of irony or self-awareness.
A wise man once said âpick fights you can winâ. This is one Schumer will lose. He needs to read the writing on the wall. The American people voted for Trump and therefor his SCOTUS pick. So let him put a wingnut on the Court. Heâs going to sooner or later. The GOP will then haul all kinds of horrid crap in front of the Court and get most of it.
The American people will vote again.
I agree. He wants a legacy that he personally worked very, very hard to deny to President Obama.
This is why the 50 state strategy made a difference, and can make a difference again.
The main problem is not Schumer. It is that Republicans have the presidency and the Senate majority. If they want to end the filibuster, what do you think Schumer can do? Not filibuster Nino Jr so that they filibuster remains in theory but not in practice?
Unless Trump nominates Garland, they need to filibuster any nominee for at least as long as Garland was left hanging. Tit for tat baby. At that point, confirm a reasonable nominee, somewhere in the Kennedy-Roberts range, but no extremists.
This is what you have to try, but still no guarantees.
We can allow Olâ Handsy to fill the Scalia seat, but any future vacancies that arise after, say, Groundhog Day, should be left to the next president to fill so that the American people can be heard.
Yes, for Donald Trump in 2020, then Donald Trump Jr in 2024. Stupid is as stupid does.
For decades itâs been a war of attrition with the Dems mostly losing. The GOP almost always find a few willing Democratic collaborators. Some Dems voted for Clarence Thomas, for example.
The stupid Dems think that voters will vote for faux Republicans rather than real ones.
