Discussion: Schiff: Nielsen Said Privately That Family Separations May Continue

For a start, let’s separate Nielsen from her job.

Sure sounds like what the order was meant to do, with the court system to blame.

And Trump from his.

What makes Nielsen imagine a new round of hostage taking would be any more successful than the last one?

Or what, was she going to try to keep the kidnappings secret this time? GLWT. Besides, the whole point of this atrocity was to terrorize immigrants publicly for the enjoyment of the racists, right?

What’s the if/when on Pruitt getting thrown under the bus?
What’s the if/when on Nielsen getting thrown under the bus?
Both?
It’s a damn shame the way they took advantage of Our President’s good nature-

What Nielsen is doing is parroting the vacillating mind of Donald Trump. One minute they’re separating families, the next one they’re claiming they’re reuniting them. What people need to recognize is that this is a government that barely functions at the executive branch level except for instances of focused malevolence or a PR stunt.

Most are trying to interpret the idiocy of what Trump says into policy and it doesn’t work. What people need to do is, instead of listening to the WH or to Jeff Sessions is to simply follow the law and to publicize the choices with which they are forced to be confronted, and let the recommendations from seasoned professionals, state and local officials and the public dictate their course of action. I saw that the Guatemalan woman who sued the gov’t to get her son back was reunited today at BWI airport in a moving scene. That tells you that the gov’t has no moral or legal authority to forcibly detain, drug, disperse and lose families forever. This is a massive human rights scandal because no one can claim ignorance at this point. This is the time we need to put the heat on all officials serving in the government to do the right thing. Ignore the Emperor with No Clothes and his Nazi minions. Fuck Trump! Fuck the Nazis! Do what is right! Unite the families!

Keep it up! Yay, America! This sure helps to restore good feelings about people in this country and makes me more optimistic that we will survive this.

Just will rename the program…

As an aside but on target for naming conventions. During the late-40s into the mid-50s my father was the board secretary for a Catholic hospital in PA. They would meet at different board members homes for executive sessions. I distinctly remember hearing on more than one occasion the board discuss the need to come up with a new name for abortions as people were questioning the number of procedures as they were out of the norm. Remember this was long before Roe and at a Catholic facility at that.

And to blackmail uncooperative politicians into funding the obscene Trump Wall. Yes, that would be the wall that Mexico is going to pay for.

Before that happens, people will have to take to the streets.

Secretary Nielsen’s high school’s current students, alumni, parents and family members of alumni, faculty and former faculty, including a former school headmaster also wants to disassociate with her:

“After the press conference we were like, ‘Oh my god, this is real and who is this woman and what is she doing in regards to everything we were taught?’ ” said Emily Dolgin, a senior at Barnard College and a 2015 graduate of the high school.

The more than 600 signatories to the open letter include members of every class since 1978, as well as alumni from as far back as the class of 1969. It has also been signed by dozens of current students, parents and family members of alumni, and by faculty and former faculty, including a former school headmaster.

The letter cites the school’s creed: “Berkeley puts people in the world who make a positive difference.”

“Given the facts at hand, we do not have faith in Secretary Nielsen to live the values of our alma mater or to make any decisions concerning outcomes for children at the border,” the letter reads. “ We recognize that it would be easy to dismiss our request as absurd or out of your purview — it would be, in many ways, disadvantageous to Berkeley to chime in. But morality transcends respectability, and today children are removed from the protection of their parents to instead be kept in cages … by a graduate of our institution.”

Edited to clarify it’s not the high school but the high school’s current students, alumni, parents and family members of alumni, faculty and former faculty, including a former school headmaster that are signatories to the letter.

Just incredible. Is anybody in charge in the Executive Branch? (Rhetorical question).

The Executive Order was pure crap. It violates the Flores Settlement about not keeping minors in custody more than 20 days, so is simply an invite to future litigation. As with everything Trump does, appearances are more important than substance no matter what.

Meanwhile, it seems increasingly obvious that the Feds have fucked up big time by failing to pair kid locations with their parents for reunification purposes, turning the USA into a “displaced person” WWII hellscape for these families.

I continue to by appalled not only by how utterly debased this Administration is, but also by its stunning incompetence. This is what happens when a bullshitting conman and sociopath, who couldn’t manage a corner candy-store competently, or run any “business” without mob money, is President of the United States,

“I was following orders” didnt work in Nuremburg as those who used that line were hung or imprisoned. It is sad that the US is now a target of the UN for human rights violations and crimes against humanity. Thanks trump. Thanks phony evangelicals, thanks trump voters. You pushed America into facist territory.

Well, not the high school, but current and former students. I guess the prep school is too worried about losing students and donors to take a principled stand.
