Wait for it…
He goes for the jugular, doesn’t he? It’s like those signs people put on their garages in the city: “Don’t even think of getting pardoned here.”
I’m sure the GOP will vote for it and GRUmp will sign!
Presidential harassment! I mean, if you can’t pardon your co-conspirators and family members, why even run for office?
Good Idea, it has as much of a chance of a snowball in hell, but should move forward with it. I republicans could vote 50 times to roll back Obamacare, I don’t see a reason why democrats should not put the spotlight on republicans and the president and make them publicly defend corruption.
That’s what I’m looking forward to, the pretzels they will make of themselves while arguing that this bill is not needed.
Might want to add Q-Tip to that Bill, just in case…
This is just to get it out there. Just introducing the legislation and bringing it up for debate is enough. Get the American people up to speed here.
The fact is Trump pardoning people as obstruction of justice is already illegal. Which is why his lawyers haven’t let him do it. It would be the kiss of death.
This move could prompt the Dotard to use his pardon powers before they’re taken away.
And knowing Ms. Lindsey’s and the Turtles subservience to the Dotard, it’s not likely to be voted on in the Senate, anyway. I appreciate this action from Rep. Schiff, but unfortunately, i think it’s only for show. No way this is voted on in the Senate. Not a single member of the GOP wants to go on record denying the Dotard his only remaining ability to obstruct the inevitable. If he goes down, they all go down.
BTW, i most sincerely hope i’m wrong.
Schiff said that his legislation would address instances when the president initiates a pardon for an individual linked to an investigation in which the president or a family member is a subject, target or witness. In those instances, the attorney general would be required to submit all evidence against the pardoned individual to Congress.
So, no, the bill would not “Block” or “Prevent” the president from issueing self-interested pardons, it just raises the political price for doing it.
“You can bet Liddle Adam Schitt WON’T be getting a PARDON from me after he and his fellow conspirators are convicted of TREASON!!! By the way, privately he’s already BEGGING ME!!! Too bad. Sorry about that, Liddle Adam!!!”
I think the optics of the Republican Senate voting it down will do great damage to their image in the eyes of the public. If it actually makes it to Trump’s desk and he vetoes it? The PR writes itself at that point.
This is so cool! I love you Adam Schiff!
I agree with Josh: this idea is no more constitutional than the action of the current National emergency order, usurping the House responsibility for allocating financing.
Nope.
Such a bill is unconstitutional on its face.
Impeachment Now!
@josh Unless there is something I’m missing, I think your opinion on the contents of this is wrong. It doesn’t say he can’t pardon, but it says he would have to submit all of the evidence against the people being pardoned to congress, so they could take political action (presumably in the form of impeachment).
If it’s just a matter of altering the process in the event of a pardon, without actually restricting the presidents powers, there is nothing prima facie unconstitutional about it.
Who reads congressional bills anymore…right!?
I agree.
