Very true. There’s no such thing. “Off the record” is asked for and agreed to. There’s no other way to arrange it. Unprofessional hack journalists who care more about access and being liked than doing their jobs will sometimes avoid quoting embarrassing stuff without having been previously explicitly asked to because they don’t want to upset the interviewee. This isn’t called “off the record.” It’s called “taking care of” the person. Professional journalists ask questions and publish the answers. They’re not there to be your media person or protect you from yourself.* Scaramucci is known for being fuzzy on these concepts.
*An exception is in local journalism where you’re often dealing with people who have little or no experience with any of this. They may say or do something that could embarrass themselves without realizing it. If it’s not germane to the story most people will let it go in my experience. The President’s communications director does not get this kind of leeway.

There seems to have been a point in the Lizza interview where Mooch asked to go “off the record” (presumably to mention the Fox lady who was there at the dinner). Then they go back “on the record.” So big surprise, Mooch is full of sht.

Donald Trump is a false god, review the comments of President Barack Obama who responded to your complaint about Wall Street feeling like a punching bag when mildly criticized for incredible greed. The incompetence of this administration is truly amazing. It’s inconceivable that a qualified White House Communications Director would simply forget to say the magic words, “off the record.” The White House is so decrepit and filled with sycophants that the top PR job in the country goes to a guy who doesn’t get the very basics of how government officials interact with the press.

How can he possibly go any darker? It think that the name “Scasramucci” should hence forth be used synonymously for Wall Street. For example, a cut in capital gains taxes should be referred to as “A tax cut for the Scaramuccis” . It helps people have perspective.
