Discussion: Sasse On NYT Op-Ed: ‘Troubling’ But ‘Not Surprising’

You’re on the Judiciary Committee, Senator, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THE PRESENT CRISIS? An opportunity to do something effective is right there in front of you, hoping to be confirmed for life to the Supreme Court.

Sassy is “troubled”. Not exactly a new look is it. So what’s he gonna do? Think it’s time for him to bump this up to the “concerned” elevated state?

Buckle up:

Boom: Those secret Kavanaugh emails that the Judiciary Committee won't let out? We've got them: Abortion, affirmative action, surveillance. Now the committee has something to talk about. https://t.co/lJJm7CADbU

These people would watch a kid with a gun going around shooting randomly, and just stand there and say that its troubling, but wont do anything to stop the kid.

Sen Sasse, do you ignore tornado sirens when you’re back in Nebraska?

Nothing. Or so has been his pattern.

That said - that one last quote is the first time I have read a public comment by any high figure about the 25th Amendment. So there is that.

“I think that the ultimate decision to publish feels self-serving, and so for the sake of public trust, I think if somebody wants to talk about the 25th Amendment, they ought to do it in public.

It is both a soft/couched statement - but a statement when uttered outloud, by a senator, is also a loud one. Conversation is perhaps no longer ‘off limits’.

Yawn…

Just more BS from Sassy Ben. He sure loves to BS but when it comes time to vote he’s just another one of Mitch’s Rubber Stamps.

I don’t disagree on the self-serving part. If this anonymous “hero” really thinks (s)he is keeping the country from going over the edge, why make the job harder? Only thing I can think of is that the author realizes Congress isn’t going to do its job and is hoping to provoke action through public pressure before something catastrophic happens?

I think Republicans should go back to the color-coded terrorist threat levels to accurately capture their current level of concern. I believe Sasse just elevated his from yellow to orange. What a brave patriot.

There is a story about Prince performing at the NFL halftime and being told just before he went on, that it was raining. His response was “Can you make it rain harder?” Trump loves chaos. Who knows? More chaos is likely better for him.

Sasse can smell Victory in 2020, it smells good…“must be careful about what I say, must be careful what I say, must be,”

Yeah, Sasse just planted the Banderillas and didn’t even leave fingerprints.

“I don’t understand the morality of why anyone would write the piece, because it seems pretty obvious to me that what it’s going to do is foster more paranoia,” he told Hewitt. “I think that the ultimate decision to publish feels self-serving, and so for the sake of public trust, I think if somebody wants to talk about the 25th Amendment, they ought to do it in public.”

Pretty disingenuous Senator … you are a smart enough guy to know that what you have said here is total BS … Don’t act so naive - you know that things are seriously FUBAR-ed at the White House - it is just that you & your party think that you will mostly benefit from this disaster - and so you will sit on your hands and let the mess continue.

sure is pretty shallow advice to the ‘anonymous’ writer - don’t shout concerns and warnings anonymously from behind the trees - come out in the open where everyone can see you … so the laser dots of the character assassins (and potentially real ones) can be easily focused on you & all aspects of your life …

Well, that was Prince, wasn’t it? Dionysian all the way. At the end of It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" he yells “Confusion!”, there’s a fanfare of avant-garde horn licks, and he drops the mic and stands with his arms outspread, his eyes staring and wild. He was striving to go beyond the earthly. But what works in art doesn’t work so well for superpowers. Trump encourages confusion because he’s so confused himself he needs everyone to be worse off.

Moi? How so? You prefer to see Trump as dada performance artist with a literal global-size canvas? Sorry, man, didn’t see where you were going with that.

The problem is that these guys love the actions of this president – they just wish he would act crazy more discreetly.
