Discussion: Sasse: GOP Tax Bill Is Not ‘World-Changing’ Key To 2018 Elections

I thought Sasse was a big deficit hawk. Not so much, apparently.

Simply amazed at the brazen and arrogant stance the GOP is taking here regarding flat out hurting Americans. Most real economic professionals say this bill helps the very wealthy while penalizing the ever shrinking middle class. Also, there’s this…

But surely at least C.E.O.s like the plan, right? Actually, not so much. A few days ago Gary Cohn, Donald Trump’s chief economic adviser, met with a group of top executives. They were asked to raise their hands if lower taxes would lead them to raise capital expenditures; only a handful did. “Why aren’t the other hands up?” asked Cohn, plaintively. The answer is that C.E.O.s, living in the real world of business, not the imaginary world of right-wing ideologues, know that tax rates aren’t that important a factor in investment decisions. So they realize that even a huge tax cut wouldn’t lead to much more spending.

…why are Republicans even trying to do this? It’s bad policy and bad politics, and the politics will get worse as voters learn more about the facts. Well, last week one G.O.P. congressman, Chris Collins of New York, gave the game away: “My donors are basically saying get it done or don’t ever call me again.”

Psst. He’s from Nebraska.

I understand the point he is trying to make - but for those who get hit, (most voters), it will be ‘world chagning’ - and if it doesn’t trickle up to the votes in 2018 - it will be a swelling Tsunami by 2020.

Especially since it won’t impact anyone’s taxes – unless you pay quarterly – until 2019.

Its almost cute how he projects his fears like that.

Its precisely because it is so important for fund raising for the GOP in 2018, that they are in a near fever pitch to get this thing done, and are once again scrapping even a pretense of regular rules of order.

And, this will be regularly grist for the campaign trail, everywhere, in 2018 regardless of its passing. If it somehow did pass, it will be used to gut republicans almost as much as Trump will be.

Heads-up, copyeditors! It’s R-NE, not IA.

Pieces of crap usually don’t change the world. But, in their own way, can certainly be life-changing.

I see the bill as bribery to try to look like a governing party. Except that a tax cut now makes zero sense economically speaking. What it will do is blow a debt hole in our economy bigger’n Dallas.
But I will say I would love to be proved wrong for everyone’s benefit money wise.

My first impression of Sasse has never really wavered, and has been confirmed once again: He is a well-dressed sack of shit.

Bought and paid for stooge talks out both sides because he sees what’s coming and will be tsk-tsking amid the wreckage, offering his reasonable self as a guide out of the wilderness. He’s slicker than Trump, you can say that much.

it’s about passing something, anything to claim a “win” even if it’s a loss for the country and most people in it. That’s how the leadership is trying to sell it to the members and they aren’t even bothering to pretend it;'s sound policy. No hearing, no real debate, absolutely shameful…

Yep; just makes him more dangerous. Fucker.

They cold have passed a bill making importation of elephant parts illegal, or passed a bill concerning infrastructure. You know, something actually useful for a change. Instead they chose bribery of the rubes as their preferred course.

Until Republicans start losing some important local elections, in places that were once thought to be safe strongholds, semi-reasonable apologists for the party of Trump like Ben Sasse will continue to speak out of both sides of their mouth.

The TGOP will only change when they start to fear for their own seats. Until then they will keep protecting (and rewarding) the donors who fund their campaigns, and ignoring the vast majority who will be harmed by their actions.

Keep resisting!

It has ever been so. Lady Day knew it:

I don’t know why anyone would think CEOs would reinvest tax savings in capital expenditures when they can use it to buy back company stock and give themselves huge personal financial benefits.

Without taxes to govern corporations, they run wild on Wall Street. Given the choice to pay Uncle Sam or write down their taxes with plant expansion, corporations find that benefiting their community benefits themselves. Those who claim to be conservative will never understand; it’s an American thing.
