Lena who? Yeah, yeah, I sorta know who she is, sorta. Never inclined to watch her show, never inclined to even think about reading her book. To throw her up as some sort of liberal goddess is just stupid.

Jesus fucking Christ can we stop this. These actions are in NO way comparable. What Lena Dunham did as a six year old girl was a normal and natural part of sexual exploration. It was not predatory and did not victimize her sister. What Duggar did happened when he was 15. It happened on multiple occasions to multiple girls, both in and out of the family. Josh knew what he was doing was wrong when he did it. Not the same thing as Lena Dunham at all.
Furthermore, Lena Dunham does not hold herself, her beliefs and her lifestyle out as somehow morally superior. She’s a comedic writer who was not offering a factual recitation of her childhood, but rather saying “Hey, here’s this weird thing I did as a kid.”
The only reason the Duggars are on TV is to sell themselves and their beliefs. They willingly invited the media and cameras into their lives to push their agenda. They have to live with the consequences of that decision, good or bad. They don’t get to say, “only talk about how virtuous and christian we are, not how our son was molesting young girls.” It doesn’t work that way.
The story here is not only about what Josh did. That’s horrible and he should have received proper and adequate treatment, as should his victims. The story is also how the family absolutely failed on every single level to deal with this behavior in an appropriate way, how they failed to protect their daughters, and how their inappropriate actions were governed by their beliefs. They told church members, who did nothing, they sent Josh to a church friend for the summer, not treatment, they preach blaming the victim, not compassion and understanding for what happened to the girls.
None of that is in any way comparable to Lena Dunham’s story. When her story came out she received some media scrutiny, not to the same level as the Duggars, but as you can see, it wasn’t the same behavior. It was far less serious.
Finally, I don’t understand how or why right-wing nut jobs feel so compelled to offer this line of defense. Are they saying that because of what Lena Dunham did, Josh Duggar and his clan should be off the hook, that it’s somehow defensible? If you think what Dunham did was wrong, which it appears Palin does, then what Josh did was at best, also wrong.
Why the compulsion to defend child molestation and its enablers?
